The Queen Is Reportedly ‘Hurt’ About Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Stepping Down as Senior Royals

Yesterday (January 8), Meghan Markle and Prince Harry dropped a bombshell announcement on their Instagram feed: they’re planning to step down from their roles as “senior” royals and work to become “financially independent.”

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” they wrote.

The world was shocked by the decision, and according to reports, so was Prince Harry’s family—including Queen Elizabeth. Palace aides told Vanity Fair that senior royals were “hurt” and “devastated” by the decision to make the announcement without going through proper channels. And, reportedly, Prince Harry’s relationship with his grandmother (and boss) has been strained for some time.

“Things have been quite difficult since the wedding,” a source told Vanity Fair. “The Queen has been rather hurt by some of Harry’s actions particularly around the time of the wedding. She feels she has done everything to smooth the path for them but this could well be the last straw.”

There are still about a million questions as to how this will all work, and based on Buckingham Palace’s statement, those decisions have not necessarily been made yet. “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work though,” it said.

“Nothing has been ruled in or out, it’s too early to say, but it is hard to have an HRH title while working on a commercial basis if that’s what they plan to do,” a source told VF.

What we do know for sure is that this situation is quite involved, and we likely won’t have a clear picture of what Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new life will really look like any time soon.

'Game of Thrones' Star Lena Headey Says Refusing Harvey Weinstein’s Advances Hurt Her Career

By now, the word’s out about Harvey Weinstein: Actresses’ stories about former Hollywood heavyweight producer allegedly harassing and assaulting them helped catalyze the #MeToo movement’s 2017 shift into high gear. What played out would not only expose and take down Weinstein, who continues to deny the allegations, but many (many) other high-profile men. Now, Lena Headey, who plays ice queen Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, has talked in more detail about her experiences with Weinstein, alleging that he hurt her career for a decade.

Headey had previously opened up in an October 2017 series of tweets about her interactions with him. In 2005, she tweeted, he made a suggestive comment to her at the Venice Film Festival, which she laughed off. Some time after, she wrote, he asked her to come up to his hotel room to get a script. Her body, she wrote, “went into high alert,” and Headey said that she spoke up for herself: “I’m not interested in anything other than work, please don’t think I got in here with you for any other reason, nothing is going to happen.” He apparently became “furious,” and when his room key didn’t work, Headey wrote, he walked her back to the elevator, holding her arm tightly and telling her not to speak to anyone about it.

After these incidents, Headey says, she was virtually iced out of her career for almost a decade. She told The Sunday Times that refusing the advances she alleges meant she barely saw any roles from Miramax, the studio Weinstein co-founded.

“After he was discovered to be a slimeball, on a grander scale than me just knowing it, I did start thinking, ‘Fuck, maybe because I didn’t shag him, that’s impacted a decade of my working life,’ because I did two jobs for Miramax before those incidents, and after that there was nothing,” she told the newspaper.

A decade with little to no work is hard on anyone, but luckily Headey landed on her feet with one of the biggest roles on one of the biggest shows on television. Weinstein, on the other hand, has recently lost his defense lawyer and is due back in court March 7 for a pre-trial hearing after being indicted last May on charges of rape. His trial, which now includes five charges of sexual assault, is scheduled to begin in May.

Camila Cabello Was Hurt by Fifth Harmony's 2017 MTV Video Music Awards Dig

Camila Cabello officially left Fifth Harmony more than a year ago, but there still seem to be some unresolved hurt feelings. In a new interview with The New York Times, Camila discusses her solo career and touches on the pain that Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui caused her with their 2017 MTV Video Music Awards performance. When asked about the moment, Camila began to tear up and said, “It definitely hurt my feelings. I wasn’t expecting it, I wasn’t prepared for it — especially because at that point I’d moved on from it. I was just like, ‘What? Why?'”

She also called out her former band members for being “petty” with the stunt. “I have to make space for the good stuff to happen in my life,” she said. “I don’t like holding onto the past, especially when it’s stuff that, in my opinion, is just petty.”

Fans will remember that the remaining members of Fifth Harmony took the stage at the VMAs with a fifth person, who many speculated was meant to represent Camila, before the silhouetted figure was dramatically pushed offstage, leaving the rest to perform. (For what it’s worth, the remaining Fifth Harmony members later clarified on Good Morning America that the message was more about who is in the group rather than who’s not.)

Meanwhile, Camila seems to be doing just fine as a solo act. Her first album drops January 12, and she was just nominated (alongside every member of One Direction) for best solo breakout award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards.
