Even the best hair brush and I are like oil and water: naturally disinclined. I have thick, Hermione Granger–like curls, and they have teeth that immediately break up my curl pattern and ruin it. Flat brushes, round brushes, tourmaline-infused brushes, $105 brushes—my youth was like a Dr. Seuss story, only instead of counting fish, my hair was breaking brushes and taking names.

Then in eighth grade, I got my hands on a copy of Lorraine Massey’s Curly Girl Handbook and have been happy with just a wide-tooth comb in my shower ever since. But recently, a press release and a promise rolled into my inbox: A brush with 325 teeth, designed for detangling wet, thick hair as painlessly as possible. According to Tangle Teezer, its Ultimate Detangler Brush was made specifically with curls in mind.

If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, its palm-sized tools are famous for their needle-thin bristles that quickly slide into your hair to straighten out tangles. While most women with curls swear by them, I’ve never found them to be significantly better on my 3b hair than my cheap shower comb. But the Ultimate Detangler is one of the brand’s first to come with a handle for leverage, plus the structurally enhanced bristles, which it says bend to minimize breakage and hair damage. I stuck it in my shower and waited for my next wash day.

I chose to go big with the test: Instead of letting my hair marinate in conditioner, like I normally do, I slathered my usual two handfuls on and immediately started dragging the brush through my hair. Actually, no—I expected to drag it, since my hair snarls and mats like a beast, but the brush glided through with zero pain and zero snags. I was done detangling in three minutes, and while I shed about as much hair as I usually do, I didn’t stick nearly as many clumps of hair on the shower wall as typical (I live alone). They all just collected on the brush, which was equally dispiriting, but much more neat.

Finally, I get the cult of Tangle Teezer. Detangling my hair now takes a fraction of the time it used to, which leaves me with a few precious more minutes for staring at the wall, reading my shampoo bottle, and sitting down in the shower because I’m tired. Maybe I’ll start using the time to shave—but I could be getting ahead of myself.

If I could spend every day of my life basking in warm, dry, 80-degree weather, I would do it in an instant. But as a born-and-raised east coaster, the only summer I know translates to godawful hair—we’re talking huge, fluffy, frizzy, coarse, knotted curls. And while I’ve recently begun the accepting voluminous hair into my life, there’s nothing like summer’s humidity to whip control out of my hands and make me feel like an awkward middle schooler all over again. If that’s you, too, I have good news. A new crop of anti-frizz hair sprays are hitting shelves this summer that promise to keep the effects of humidity at bay.

Much like everything in beauty, we’ve been burnt by this claim before. Traditional hair sprays revolve around the promise of keeping your style in place, yet that goes against the flow and movement that make curls so much fun. My dream is curls that are well-defined and bouncy, sexy and soft, that still have some semblance of control. In 86-percent humidity, that’s a highly difficult ask. But Drybar, Oribe, and AG Hair’s new releases all promised to be up to the task, thanks to formulas that draw on wax in a spray form. Wax itself has been around for decades, but where once it was reserved for gluey pomades and wet-look styles that require Kristen Stewart’s confidence to pull off, sprays offer the humidity-blocking hold that stylists love pomades for but in an easy-to-use way.

I tested all the top anti-frizz contenders in the category, and came away with three of the best new wax sprays. My new obsessions, ahead.

The Best Low Hold Anti-Humidity Spray:
Drybar The Kicker Finishing Spray Wax, $26, sephora.com

I felt great about how my hair looked after dousing it in Drybar’s latest release, The Kicker. It’s a light, malleable, sweet-smelling wax spray, with hold that I felt on my hair for about a minute before it absorbed like a thin layer of armor.

The early summer weather in New York was bad—muggy, hot, and moist. It was one of those days when you step off the subway, sweat your way to the office, and then immediately feel your sweat chill in the AC. I took my after photo (on right) after venturing outside for lunch, and all things considered, I was impressed. On my eager-to-poof curls, the thin layer of frizz was nothing compared to the undefined curl clouds I’d have seen otherwise.

The Best Medium Hold Anti-Humidity Spray:
Oribe Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax, $42, bloomingdales.com

Like literally all Oribe products, the Flash Form spray wax smells incredible (the brand calls the scent “Cote d’Azur,” and I do want to go there). You can definitely feel the touted “fortifying polymer blend” and the wheat starch in the formula—to the touch, the wax did feel slightly stickier immediately after I sprayed it on. If you’re trying to build texture or looking for a wave spray, this would be the one to try, but I was relieved when the sensation eventually disappeared. Pro: It kept my curls defined and stopped the air’s moisture from penetrating.

The Best Heavy Hold Anti-Humidity Spray:
AG Hair Dry Wax, $21, ulta.com

The “dry” moniker came through here, with AG’s option giving the heaviest hold of the three, plus a conditioning edge thanks to its coconut and seaberry oil. My hair was big to start with this day, so in a side-by-side comparison it’s deeply impressive that I ended the day with volume that was nearly equivalent. Frizz did come for some of my curl definition, but given the sweat that was literally glistening on my face as I took the “after” in my sweatbox of a New York apartment, I can’t fault the spray for that—sweat’s an occupational hazard. I also need to note, the AG smells incredible. Each of the contenders smelled great, but something in the AG draws me most. It smells like your coolest camp counselor’s shampoo. I hope she’s proud of me.

Logan Browning is having a major moment right now. The breakout actress just wrapped up the second season of her hit Netflix series Dear White People and is slated to star in the upcoming horror-thriller The Perfection (alongside Girls alum Allison Williams). Over the last year, she’s also become the picture of red carpet perfection owning her ever-evolving style and natural curls. We chatted with the skin-obsessed, Atlanta-born star about everything—from multi-masking to her bouncy curl secret to the sisterhood that Time’s Up has created in Hollywood. Here are the highlights:

Glamour: You’re all about skin. What aspect of it are you the most focused on?

Logan Browning: I have sensitive, acne-prone, stress-me-out skin. I get up in the morning and run to the mirror to be like, OK, we’re good. Then, before I even leave work, I take off my makeup with Bioderma Micellar Water. And I use masks as cleansers when my skin acts up—they calm my business down. Also, I notice a huge difference in my skin when I’m taking zinc, omega-3, and turmeric.

Glamour: Who are your beauty crushes?

LB: My favorite thing to google is “young Zoë Kravitz,” to see her on the carpet with her parents. Now you can see that she’s really homed in on who she is as a beauty icon—someone who is strong and sexy and always keeps you on your toes.

Glamour: It’s impossible not to discuss your amazing hair. Some intel, please.

LB: I am a DevaCurl hag. As a curly girl, it took me a long time to find what works. In the shower I detangle section by section. I use their No Poo-Original, Heaven in Hair, and mix B’Leave-In with Arc Angel Gel. I twist it up in a towel turban and let it air-dry because I like my hair to be really big. Then there’s a lot of shaking and pulling.

Glamour: After years of it straight, why did you start wearing your hair natural?

LB: I thought that straight hair made me pretty. And [when I was] growing up in the South, getting my hair done once a week was a thing. By college, I had never seen it curly. I was curious. I don’t even know how to explain the feeling that I get from being a curly girl. There’s a whole new personality.

Glamour: What would you tell your 13-year-old self?

LB: Actually, I would really want to hear from her, have her remind me of what she wanted and what her dreams were.

Glamour: As a woman in Hollywood, how has Time’s Up shifted your industry view?

LB: I realize how much I have hidden from myself: the times I’ve been uncomfortable, the times people have been inappropriate toward me or when I felt powerless. Now everyone is genuinely encouraging and empowering each other—I feel like I have a big sister who has my back.

I’ve always wanted to be the girl who lives and dies by her diffuser. Unfortunately, patience is not a virtue I posses, and airdrying is my way of life. Every morning my routine is predictable if not ideal. I wake up, jump in the shower—because that’s what my curls need, and I do it for the curls—and then go about at least half the day with a look that I refer to as “swamp rat.” Not in self-loathing way; it is what it is. I look like I’ve emerged from the deep, and the ringlets I eventually end up with make it worthwhile. But still, I’ll try anything that can help speed up the process without giving me a mushroom cloud of frizz. The only thing I’ve found? The unsung hero that is a $6 microfiber turban.

For the uninitiated, that “mushroom cloud of frizz” phrase comes from what happens when you use a terrycloth towel to twist your hair up. While it does suck moisture out, it goes too far—the coarse, grabby fibers ruffle your hair’s cuticle, which leads to an explosion of frizz. The common curly hair alternative is “plopping,” or using a cotton T-shirt to absorb just the right amount of moisture to help your curls dry while staying smooth. It sounds great. Unfortunately, I’ve watched at least ten videos on how to plop on YouTube, and I just can’t get it. I’ve read the how-to forums, I’ve watched the tutorial videos, and it never wrings barely a drop of wetness from my hair.

After showering, you flip your head over and position the button at the nape of your neck. Twist the overhang of fabric up with your hair inside, and slide the loop around the button. Enter heaven. I go about the rest of my morning routine with the turban on, while the microfiber material pulls out wetness without getting up in the cuticle’s business. Twenty minutes later, I unfurl the turban to significantly dryer strands. They’re still damp, but doable—and at least eight times less swamp rat than when I started. Afternoon comes, dry hair arrives a few hours earlier than it otherwise would, and there’s significantly less frizz in sight. I’ll never be without it again.
