'Crazy Rich Asians' Supporters Are Using This Hashtag to Make Sure It Slays at the Box Office

Crazy Rich Asians hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but it’s already slated to make movie history. The film, starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding, almost cast a white female in the leading role, but thanks to the author of the source material, Kevin Kwan, that’s not happening—and it’s a major win for representation.

Supporters of the movie, though, don’t just want Asian Americans to feel seen; they want it to slay at the box office. That’s why there’s a hashtag circling on Twitter right now, #GoldOpen, that’s all about making sure people buy a ticket to Crazy Rich Asians for its opening weekend.

It started when Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu said the film is “more than just a movie,” but a “movement.” That prompted digital media entrepreneur Bing Chen to take action. “EVERY MOVEMENT NEEDS ITS MAFIA,” he tweeted. “That’s why 100+ of us have bought out theaters to give #CrazyRichAsians a #GoldOpen. Join us and buy your tickets NOW for opening week on @Fandango.com.”

More theaters and influencers followed suit after Chen’s tweet. “We’ve joined the #GoldOpen movement and bought out a whole theater at the @alamodrafthouse for our #crazyrichaustin VIPs! #crazyrichasians,” the Austin Asian American Film Festival tweeted shortly after Chen’s initial proposal.

Many people are jazzed about this movement too:

It’s frustrating some people in Hollywood still think minority-led films can’t be financially successful, despite the fact that’s been proved wrong many, many times. (Please see Get Out and Girls Trip for just two recent examples.) Hopefully, a killer weekend for Crazy Rich Asians will shut that notion down for good. The film hits theaters everywhere August 15.

The Amazon Sample Box Shop Is the Best Discovery I Ever Made

My love of samples dates back decades. When I was a kid growing up in the Midwest, I would accompany my dad to Sam’s Club on Saturday afternoons, an outing that was mostly about buying bulk packs of toilet paper and ogling the massive meat freezers. But by far the best part of that father-daughter adventure was cruising through the food aisles and sampling whatever wares happened to be on display that day. Sometimes it was mini cups of smoothies; other times, bite-sized burgers and tiny sesame pancakes. These snacks were adorable! They were tasty! But mostly, they were miniature—a fact that revealed to me that sometimes excellent things come in small packages.

Fast forward to now. I still love a sample, though I’m less compelled by the edible varieties than I am beauty products. Single use lipsticks in little square foil pouches? Be mine. Fancy serums and anti-aging creams I’d never actually buy but am happy to test out for the heck of it? I’m hoarding a bunch in a Ziplock in my bathroom at this very moment. Okay, several Ziplocks. A girl can never have too many packets of free Fekkai shampoo and conditioner duos, right?

The only thing is: With these kinds of treasures, you can’t always just head to your local box store and get a fix. You have to wait for them to avail themselves to you, sometimes as extras that get sent along with full-size product purchases, sometimes stuck to postcards inside the pages of magazines, sometimes as gifts from a beauty editor goddess friend. You can’t go out and find them. You have to let them find you. (At this point it bears mentioning: I am not an especially patient person.)

If you can relate to any of this, then let me introduce you to a small miracle. Amazon Samples—a new-ish but not widely known about service that allows you to order a box of tiny, try-it-out treats as a Prime member—is making my sample collecting habits a little easier these days. Not long ago, when I came across the collection page, I was delighted to discover the women’s luxury beauty box, which comes with products like Vichy serums and Mario Badescu’s best-selling potions. There are a couple different varieties of this particular box, and all of them contain a healthy smattering of stuff that you’ve either tried and loved or have been angling to get your hands on. Think: High-end sun care, scrubs, lotions, anti-aging treatments, face wipes, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

It’s not just women’s personal care items either. There’s a box for men’s grooming supplies, too, and one for pet treats; there’s a box for on-the-go snacks and workout fuel (Gatorade and Optimum Nutrition are both on the list of boxes you can order). And while yes, technically these aren’t free samples—some cost under $10 while others go up to $20—whatever you spend is credited toward the purchase of a full-sized version of a product in your box.

If you’re thinking that it sounds a lot like Birchbox…well, you’re right. Subscription boxes have turned into a major trend over the last decade, and it’s not exactly surprising that Amazon would want to get in on the game. But while a once-a-month beauty box is great, so is being able to order samples whenever you want, targeted to whatever your heart desires. In summary: What could be more convenient than that?

Ocean's 8 Is Officially No. 1 at the North American Box Office—Thanks Largely to Women

The cast of Ocean’s 8 is basically a who’s-who of talented women: Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway as a villain with ostentatious French-tipped nails (more on that here). Following the formula of previous, male-centric Ocean’s movies, this version shines the spotlight on Bullock, who plays fresh-out-of-prison Debbie Ocean—sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney)—who assembles a girl gang of specialists to steal a diamond at the Met Gala. And you can guess the capers that go on from there.

Now, the movie has another feather to add to its cap: Ocean’s 8 easily took No. 1 at the North American box office during its first weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with an estimated $41.5 million coming in from a reported 4,145 theaters.

A huge part of its success? The Hollywood Reporter estimates that almost 70 percent of Ocean’s 8‘s opening-weekend audience identified as female. The strong box office showing marks a big win for female-led movies overall—not to mention gender-flipping remakes—and hopefully shows Hollywood, yet again, that audiences will show up for movies that feature strong, compelling, representative characters (looking at you, Black Panther).

Your move, Hollywood: women showed up for this summer blockbuster. What else do you have for us?

Beyoncé Held Blue Ivy's Juice Box at the 2018 Grammys, and the Internet Is Losing It

The 2018 Grammys were a bust for women, to be honest, but there was one saving grace from the evening. Actually, make that two saving graces: Beyoncé and her 6-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. These two stole the show at the Grammys, hands down—and Bey didn’t even perform. They just lived their lives, and dozens of photographers were there to capture it.

Seriously, every facial expression Blue made throughout the evening sent Twitter users ablaze. Things hit a fever pitch when a clip of Blue seemingly telling Beyoncé and Jay Z to calm down during the show went viral. It’s a hilarious, endearing moment that confirmed Blue’s actually the one calling the shots in the Carter household. As she should be!

And now we have even more proof of this: A photographer at the Grammys snapped a pic of Beyoncé holding Blue’s snacks and juice box, and it’s quickly taking over the Internet. For good reason, too: To the world, Beyoncé is this untouchable music deity, but to Blue she’s just her mom who holds the snacks for safe keeping. That’s incredibly humbling, and it’s a nice little reminder that everyone—even Beyoncé—is a human being. Here’s the pic:

Of course, the Twitter reactions to this have been pretty great. “While we were all looking for #Beyonce at the #Grammys, she was out getting snacks for #BlueIvy,” a radio station tweeted. “She’s wearing $6.8 million worth of diamonds, but who cares? Beyonce clutching Blue Ivy’s juice box is everything,” tweeted someone else.

Below, peep the best (and funniest) reactions to Beyoncé being a regular-AF mom at the Grammys.

Sigh. If only things from the actual Grammys show got us this excited.
