Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Had an Emotional Goodbye With Their U.K. Staff

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry capped off what are believed to be their final engagements as working members of the royal family on Monday, March 9 at the Commonwealth Day services—alongside Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Charles, and Queen Elizabeth.

The couple will soon embark on the latest chapter of their lives in North America, starting their new charitable entity and raising baby Archie. Because they will no longer be full-time working royals, their staff in the U.K. has been let go. But, according to Page Six, the Sussexes hosted a special celebration while they were in London to thank their team for all of their hard work.

The “festive” lunch was held at The Goring Hotel on Thursday, March 5. “Harry and Meghan have often done fun things like throwing pizza parties or hiring ice cream trucks for their staff, but they wanted to do something special going into this last week together,” their source said. “They toasted the team and thanked them for everything they have done. Some of the staffers cried.”

“They’ve all been through so much together, and the staff [has] been working around the clock to make sure this last visit was as seamless as possible,” the source continued. “Meghan and Harry really wanted to show their appreciation, they know how hard everyone has worked.”

The lunch for their staff wasn’t the only private event the Sussexes attended while in the U.K. On March 10, they posted previously unseen photos from a meeting they held with youth leaders in their roles as President and Vice President of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, where they are seen smiling and laughing.

Markle also visited the National Theatre, of which she is a royal patron.

What’s next for Meghan Markle and (Prince) Harry is a bit unknown at the moment. We have yet to hear all the details about the new charity organization they are forming, where exactly in North America they plan to live, or how they plan to make the money they’ll now be allowed to earn outside of the royal fold. But we can’t wait to find out.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Make History by Hiring an All-Female Senior Staff

As assistant private secretary for Markle and Prince Harry, Wong helps build strategic initiatives across issues like HIV/AIDS, youth engagement in the Commonwealth, and mental health. Prior to this job, she worked in the Obama administration as a political appointee.

Latham is a dual British and American citizen, and has a background in politics on both sides of the pond. She’s worked with Hillary and Bill Clinton, as well as Barack Obama, in addition to a major British public relations firm.

“Harry and Meghan have felt frustrated by the one-size-fits-all approach to being a working royal and are aiming their star far higher,” a royal source told Express UK. “It is clear they think Fiona is the person to do that. Internally, the hope is, as someone with enormous diplomatic experience, she will also understand that, whether you like it or not, there are limitations to being a royal for a very good reason.”

The Daily Mail reports that there are also two female press officers and a “team of female private office employees” on Markle and Harry’s official payroll. They do, however, reportedly have a man in charge of internal publicity, including the Sussex Royal Instagram account.

Here's How Meghan Markle's Staff Actually Feels About Her

A few months ago, several rumors hit the Internet alleging Meghan Markle‘s staff finds her “difficult” and demanding. Apparently, the Duchess of Sussex’s “up and at ‘em west coast energy”—which includes sending emails at 5 A.M.—has baffled employees on more than one occasion. Can you imagine your boss sending emails? The nerve! The horror! But for real: When did enthusiasm at work become a bad thing?

According to a new report from ELLE, the answer is “never.” A well-connected royals source tells the magazine that stories about Markle rubbing royal staffers the wrong way are complete rubbish. In fact, the duchess is reportedly well-liked by the people she works with, and they’re excited by her fresh perspective.

Not only that, but Markle is “anxious” to learn about royal protocol and takes her new gig within the royal sphere seriously. According to ELLE‘s source, she’s also been receptive to the people on the inside helping her adjust. This sounds more realistic than royal staffers ducking for cover every time Markle sends a G-chat.

Oh, and as for those rumors about Markle and Kate Middleton feuding? The source tells ELLE they’re not true, either. “The stories of the two duchesses having a major ongoing feud are just overblown,” the source said. “They have enormous respect for each other and are both devoted to representing Her Majesty in the humanitarian and charitable work they do.”

There you have it, folks. Meghan Markle is just a grown woman trying to do her job and live her life as best as she can. There’s literally nothing to see here. No feuds. No demands. No nothing.
