Kate Middleton‘s schedule usually involves events of a prestigious caliber: royal tours, speaking at a charity fundraisers, attending red carpets. But this week, unsuspecting locals found out that Middleton’s calendar also includes classic parenting activities, like taking her kids shopping for last-minute Halloween costumes.
Unlike most occasions the royal family attend, the Duchess of Cambridge’s costume excursion was 100% casual. Princess George and Princess Charlotte followed their mother through the store to browse costumes. As they shopped, Middleton made some time to chat with royal fans in the store; She reportedly asked some children what they were planning on wearing for Halloween this year. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, her bodyguard reportedly asked shoppers to not take pictures.
Shopper Kathy Whittaker told the Mirror about the memorable sighting. “You don’t expect to see that when you go shopping,” she said. “I couldn’t concentrate on my shopping.” (Relatable.)
Even though Middleton was making a routine shopping trip, she was unsurprisingly wearing a polished outfit for her errand. “Kate was wearing black trousers and a black polo neck. Charlotte was wearing a little checkered skirt but I couldn’t see anything else,” Whittaker told the Mirror. “She just seemed so down to earth and beautiful as always.”
It’s unclear which costumes the royals landed on for Halloween 2019. But, perhaps like the rest of the Internet, the Duchess of Cambridge will settle on a Euphoria-inspired look, glittery makeup and all.
Similarly, Sydney Grace grew her Instagram presence by posting about all things sustainable plus-size fashion. (You might know her as @ohhhhhhhhhoney.) She tells me that her experience with vintage denim shopping as a plus-sized person has been “frustrating at times,” pointing out how almost all vintage denim shops are curated towards straight-size shoppers. “For a long time, shopping online for vintage or second-hand denim was not an option for me.” Still, she has come up with a few helpful tips and tricks over the years when it comes to finding the right pair in her size.
Ahead, they share their four cardinal rules for shopping for plus size vintage jeans.
Know where to look (and what to look for).
When it comes to her favorite place to shop for plus size denim, Grace names Goodwill for their easy-to-shop organization and changing rooms. While a lot of vintage clothing is bought and sold online these days, being able to try on secondhand items when you’re plus size is invaluable. “Most Goodwills have sizing sections, making it easier for me to avoid lots of sifting through sizes that are too small for me,” she says.
Once you’re there, it helps to know specific labels and styles to keep an eye out for. Zack suggests going after one specific men’s silhouette “In my personal vintage denim shopping experience (and fitting customers in vintage denim), Levis 550s tend to fit the curves nicely and fit various body types,” she says, noting that “size and fit may vary by color.”
Don’t be afraid of a belt.
“Oftentimes, denim is snug on my bum/hips, but is too loose in my waist, so I belt ‘em,” Zack says of her own vintage denim shopping experience, mentioning that she also has a tailor she trusts that can work magic on vintage denim that isn’t 100 percent right.
Think beyond what you see on the hanger.
“Often times, vintage denim will need some sort of ‘flipping;’ the inseam may be way too long, the waist may need to be taken in, a zipper may look weird, the wash may not be your favorite…but if you can envision some sort of end product, that will help you identify potential in a good pair of jeans!” Grace says. Think about the potential in the denim, rather than what you have in front of you right now—what it might look like if you were to hem it, hand-dye it, or cut it up. Zack suggests getting acquainted with a good tailor for things you’re not as skilled at (taking a waistband in, for example).
Get familiar with plus size-focused, online-only secondhand retailers.
While buying plus size vintage denim from any old online vintage retailer might be risky, you’re way more likely to have a good experience if you find vintage shops that specialize in plus size items. Grace names Shop Berriez as well as LuvSick Plus as two online plus size vintage shops that she loves. She also suggests looking into secondhand sellers as opposed to vintage-only for some more options, naming @SellTradePlus on Instagram as a great resource.
Pinterest is for planning. So it’s no surprise that, as some try to catch on to its big Halloween costume predictions for 2019, the platform is already thinking ahead to holiday. It has plenty to work off of: Pinterest released its Holiday Guide, which details the major trends in decor, gifts, and, of course, fashion based on what people are searching for, saving, and pinning. And already, it has identified four types of holiday dresses you can expect to see all over the party circuit this year.
According to Pinterest, there’s been an increased interest in black silk skirts (searches between July 2018 and July 2019 increased by 458%), long satin dresses (by 331%), animal-print dresses (by 204%), and puffy sleeve dresses (by 108%). These trends are very much aligned with what we’ve seen on the runway during Fashion Week and on celebrities in recent months, so there aren’t any surprises. What this report does give us is permission to start planning out our party outfits a little early this year—before our picks start selling out. Ahead, shop the best holiday dresses for 2019.

From Kylie Jenner‘s Amazon bikinis to Kendall Jenner‘s off-duty outfits, the Kardashian-Jenner family has frequently made headlines for each sister’s individual style. And they’ve cashed in on it too, with collaborations with PacSun and Walmart that have given fans a chance to stock their closets with items inspired by their fashion. But a new Kardashian-Jenner business could bring their actual wardrobes directly to yours.
According to Women’s Wear Daily, the family is launching Kardashian Kloset, an online resale platform through which you can purchase items directly from the closets of various Kardashian-Jenners, including Kris, Kendall, and Kylie. It opens for business on Friday, October 11.
Kris Jenner announced some of the details regarding the store in an Instagram post. “For the first time you’ll be able to shop items directly from our closets,” she wrote.
The Kardashian Kloset Insta has dropped a few sneak peeks of what shoppers might be able to cop, like a blue Kith x MISBHV suit worn by Kylie and a red Gucci handbag that belonged to Kris.
We’ll have to stay tuned to see whether other members of the K-J fam participate in the venture. In the meantime, we’ll be holding out hope that some of our fave looks—Kylie’s multiple birthday outfits, Kendall’s unusual LBD, and Kylie’s famous vacation hat—will be included.

Your web browser—as well as social media sites—are constantly sending you targeted ads based on your browser history—what you’ve been searching for or liking. Targeted ads can really trigger people to spend when they weren’t planning to. So on top of targeted ads, you don’t also need marketing emails from your favorite retailers enticing you to “add to cart.” The next time you see one (or 20) in your inbox, go ahead and click unsubscribe.
Get off social media
Stop scrolling the ‘gram: Instagram can be a wonderful source of inspiration, but it can also send you down a rabbit hole where you’re looking at post after post of other people’s wonderful, beautiful, filtered lives. It can leave you feeling less-than—and to fill that void, you might turn to a quick fix, which is buying something that you don’t really need.
Use the 24-hour rule
Put items in your cart and wait 24 hours to see if you still want them. Studies show that distancing yourself from a purchase for a short while will lower dopamine levels, and you can make a more rational purchasing decision. You may realize you really don’t need it—or even want it all that badly.
Be honest with yourself and others
If you do struggle with compulsive shopping, let the people close to you know your struggles and enlist their help and encouragement. You need accountability to get through any of life’s challenges, including this one.
