MTV VMAs 2018: See The Full List of Nominations


The 2018 MTV VMAs nominations have been revealed, and the list includes artists who broke new ground—and broke records—all year. Leading the pack is Cardi B with 10 nominations, mostly for her collaboration with Bruno Mars, “Finesse.” Trailing closely after her are The Carters (Bey and Jay, obvi) with eight nominations for “APES**T.” Childish Gambino—real name Donald Glover— and Drake both have seven nominations, for “This Is America” and “God’s Plan,” respectively.

MTV made headlines last year when it dropped gendered categories from its Movie and TV Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), meaning all male, female, and nonbinary artists will compete in the same award categories. The Best Female Video and Best Male Video awards are now combined into one category: Artist of the Year. And that’s not the only change: A new category—Video With a Message—has been added to celebrate videos that inspired viewers to stand up and fight injustice.

Meryl Streep Just Broke Her Own Oscars Record for the Most Acting Nominations


Typical Streep! Grande Dame of film acting Meryl Streep was just nominated for Best Actress for her role as Katharine Graham in Steven Spielberg’s The Post, a historical drama about The Washington Post battle against the Nixon administration to publish the Pentagon Papers. This is Streep’s 21st acting nomination, breaking her own record for most nominated actor ever. She’s well ahead of the game, since Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn are tied for second place, with a measly 12 nominations apiece. While Streep is the most nominated actress in history, she isn’t actually the biggest winner; while she and a handful of others have three statuettes at home, Katharine Hepburn is the only person ever to take four for acting.

“I am honored beyond measure by this nomination for a film I love, a film that stands in defense of press freedom, and inclusion of women’s voices in the movement of history,” Streep said in a statement, per the Huffington Post following Tuesday’s nominations announcement. “Proud of the film, and all her filmmakers. Thank you from a full heart.”

The Post was also nominated for Best Picture, but the buzzy and timely drama failed to crack other categories. Still, there’s no denying that Streep is really good in it. Streep faces stiff competition for Best Actress, though. She’s up against Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya), and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird). McDormand is the clear favorite to win after this past weekend’s SAG Awards win.

But, undoubtedly, this latest nomination only further cements Streep as the greatest film actress of her time. She only very rarely makes a bad movie, and it’s never bad because of her. She can next be seen on the big screen in two highly anticipated musical sequels: Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! and Mary Poppins Returns. Viva La Streep!

The 2018 Oscar Nominations Saw Several Firsts for Females in Hollywood, Including Greta Gerwig and Mary J. Blige


According to all available statistics, the film industry is especially brutal to the careers of women, who are routinely in the minority when it comes to landing jobs behind the camera. The challenges faced by women of color are even greater. But after a year of change in the cultural conversation around how women are treated in Hollywood and other industries, there are at least a few bright spots to be found in this morning’s Oscar nominations.

For starters, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, making Gerwig the first female director to land a Best Director nomination for her directorial debut. The indie darling was already an established screenwriter, with credits on projects in which she also starred, like Frances Ha and Mistress America. But Lady Bird represented her first solo foray behind the camera (she previously co-directed 2008’s Nights and Weekends with Joe Swanberg). In addition to breaking this particular barrier, Gerwig is now in the teeny tiny club of five women ever nominated for the prize. She joins a handful of other luminaries like Jane Campion and Sofia Coppola. (The club really ought to have included Dee Rees and Patty Jenkins this year, sigh.) Best Director has been won by a woman only once, in 2010 when Kathryn Bigelow took home the Oscar for The Hurt Locker.

Another crack in the glass ceiling comes from Rachel Morrison, who just became the first and only women ever nominated for Best Cinematography, for her work on Dee Rees’s Mudbound. Yes, you read that right, after 90 years, there is finally one woman nominated in this category. Also nominated for her work in Mudbound is Mary J. Blige, who just became the first women ever to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress for a performance in a film directed by a woman of color, as well as the first woman to be nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song in the same year.

Here’s hoping these incredibly talented women go home with some hardware next month.

The 2018 Grammy Nominations Are Here—See the Full List


The 2018 Grammy nominations were announced this morning, and many of your faves are included. Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar, and Childish Gambino lead the pack with the most nominations—which is a huge deal given the show’s previous history of snubbing artists of color. Lorde’s Melodrama LP is the only female Album of the Year nominee, which is both confusing and disappointing. Several female artists released albums this year that were more than worthy of a nomination. (Joanne, anyone?) It’s a good thing the pop categories are capital S-stacked with women. (Kesha finally got her Grammy nomination, people!)
