Zoë Kravitz Is Your New Catwoman

In perfect casting news, Zoë Kravitz is officially taking on the iconic role of Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman, in Matt Reeves’s upcoming adaptation of Batman. (It’s slated to come out in 2021.) Kravitz will star opposite Robert Pattinson and join a long line of brilliant actresses who have portrayed the supervillain—among them Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Halle Berry.

But seeing Kravitz as Catwoman is especially significant because the actor, who has been vocal about the ways in which casting directors pigeonhole women of color, was actually turned away from a smaller role in a past Batman production. She talked to Nylon about the experience in 2015 and said, “They told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t ‘going urban.’ I was like, ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ‘Yo, what’s up Batman? What’s going on wit chu?’”

Now she’s at the very top of the bill—and the internet has been rejoicing, naturally. Some pointed out that Kravitz will be a great fit for the role because she already voiced the character in the Lego Batman Movie. Others enjoyed that Jason Momoa, who is married to her mother, Lisa Bonet, plays Aquaman, which makes for a fun family DC mashup.

Zoë Kravitz also got an adorable message from Momoa, offering his congratulations for landing the part.

“I’m so proud of u zozo bear. On and off screen OHANA. DC WB ohana Lola and Wolfies big sister is CAT WOMAN,” he wrote in the caption that accompanied a photo of the two of them together. “Unbelievable so freaking stoked. Your going to have so much fun.”

ICYMI, Zoë Kravitz Is Engaged—and She Just Showed Off Her Ring

Actress Zoë Kravitz first announced her engagement to fellow actor Karl Glusman in her Rolling Stone cover story last month. (You know, the one where she recreated mom Lisa Bonet’s famous nude shot.) In it, she dropped a little bomb that largely passed unnoticed: “Oh yeah, I’m engaged,” she casually said in the interview. “I haven’t told anyone yet—I mean, I haven’t told the world. I wanted to keep it private.”

But now that the news is out, she’s celebrating it on social media—and showing off her stunning diamond engagement ring. “♥️ ? ♥️,” she captioned a photo of her and Glusman at the premiere of her latest film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald in Paris. Fans soon flooded her comments section with congratulations.

The couple met two years ago at a bar via a completely relatable non-setup setup by friends. Apparently Glusman already had a crush on Kravitz but was too nervous to talk to her for most of the evening. But he eventually did, and things kicked off. Fast-forward to February, when he popped the question: “I was in sweatpants,” Kravitz told Rolling Stone. “I think I was a little drunk. I could feel his heart beating so fast—I was like, ‘Baby, are you OK?’ I was actually worried about him!”

But, she says, “he nailed it,” she said. “And I love that it wasn’t this elaborate plan in Paris. It was at home, in sweatpants.” And the ring? It was exactly the one she’d fantasized about.

“I can be my weirdest self around him,” Kravitz added in the interview. “It’s so relaxing to be around someone where you can be a hundred percent how you feel.”

No word yet on a wedding date or location, but we’re guessing the reception might just include a performance by father of the bride Lenny.
