Natasha Pickowicz Makes Fundraising For Planned Parenthood a Sweet Deal

It was November 9, 2016, and Natasha Pickowicz woke up with an emotional hangover. She felt stunned. Drained. Mad. Donald Trump had just clinched the election, but she still had to pick herself up, endure her normal hour-long commute, and go to her job at Flora Bar, as if nothing had happened. But at work, no one could focus. Instead the chefs, managers, and staff met to figure out how to turn pain into purpose.

So Pickowicz—the executive pastry chef at Flora Bar and Café Altro Paradiso best known for her black cardamom-heavy sticky buns—went back to basics. She proposed the idea of a bake sale. “I was like, what if we did something that everybody could relate to this nostalgic, timeless idea,” she tells Glamour. “Whether you were little and it was in your church basement, or in middle school for your field hockey team, everyone’s had the experience of setting up your table, hanging out with friends, and raising money [with baked goods].”

Simple in theory, sure, but the bake sale Pickowicz, 35, pulled off would put any PTA mom to shame. Gone were traces of Betty Crocker or Pillsbury Funfetti. Instead, in the spring of 2017, Pickowicz invited 18 world-renowned pastry chefs and friends to come together and bake 50 items each. People like Bon Appetit‘s Claire Saffitz and James Beard award-winning cookbook author Dorie Greenspan all joined forces to sell their signature goods and raise funds for Planned Parenthood of New York City with each spoonful of sugar. That afternoon, Pickowicz collected $8,000—and an annual tradition was born.

In 2018, Pickowicz raised $22,000—once again all in $5 increments. And for the third, which was held this past spring, Picowicz set the ambitious goal of $40,000. She met it, and then some, raising $96,000. The growth has been exponential, but there are certain pillars that have anchored each event. It takes place at Café Altro Paradiso, it lasts one (long) shift, and proceeds benefit Planned Parenthood of New York City, not the national organization. “It was important to me that it was about our community and what’s happening here. This way I can find out first-hand how our funds are getting used,” she says. “The money is going towards more hormone therapy centers in the boroughs. They’re also building a fleet of mobile health centers, these trucks that will park and and be based in underserved areas. So it’s these hyper-regional things that PP NYC is working on.”

And while Pickowicz’s bake sale has remained focused on New York, for New York, more and more bake sales like hers are popping up nationwide. She’s frequently tagged on Instagram in photos from bake sales in Nashville or Charlotte, or someone emails her for advice. “I’ve had young women reach out to me and be like, ‘I had a bake sale at my local park!’ And then there’s the bigger ones, like in New Orleans where they raised $60,000,” she says. “People are also doing them in red states, where they’ve gotten a lot of blow back from people in the community who are offended by it. Like this summer we saw a lot of them for Yellowhammer Fund and [to protect reproductive rights] in Alabama.”

As she begins planning for her 2020 bake sale, Pickowicz dreams of seeing even more people follow in her footsteps—and for the sale to have an even larger impact. “With the presidential election next fall, it’s going to be a really, really crucial year. And with four years having gone by, I hope that next year explodes more than ever,” she says.

Fundraising Gala by Keyano College Raised More Than $300,000

Keyano College, fundraising

An annual high class fundraising gala by Keyano College has managed to raise $320,000, but this is less than what the event has drawn in on previous years. Last year the gala drew in a little over $400,000, and in 2011 over $500,000 was raised for the event. The foundation behind the event has said that the results were impressive in spite of being less than years past. Keyano College Foundation board vice-chair Tony Mankowski issued a press release that included the following statement “The tremendous support we have received is an important reminder of how generous our community is, even during difficult times.” The release also stated “I would like to thank all our partners, donors, and friends for supporting Gala. Their commitment to Gala, and to the activities of the Foundation year round, is an important investment in the future of our community, as Keyano graduates go on to become nurses in our hospital, teachers in our schools, and trades people at site.”

The proceeds from the event will go to the Keyano College Foundation. According to the foundation money raised will be utilized in order to “support students, programming, athletics, theatre, and infrastructure improvements at the College.” Keyano College vice president of external relations Therese Greenwood explained “We’re very happy with the results, and the key number for us (is) that 90% of our sponsors stayed with us this year. What that shows it that the community remains committed to Keyano College.” The headlining act at the event was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a Grammy award winning group from the USA . The individual ticket price was $350 and there was also fundraising through auctions and corporate and industry sponsorships. More than 1,000 people showed up for the gala.

The Fort McMurray United Way Announces They Have Reached Amost Half of Their Fundraising Goal

fundraising, Fort McMurray United Way

The Fort McMurray United Way recently announced that the organization has reached half of their fundraising goal of $8 million so far, but the agency still has a way to go in order to completely reach the ambitious goal that they have set. A press release sent out last Friday from United Way announced that they were slightly short of the 50% mark for the goal set this year, and there are still a few weeks left in the fundraising campaign. Campaign chairperson Marty Giles said “We are in good shape, but we have to keep the energy up until the last dollar comes in. The agencies are counting on us.”In the last week there have been a number of events held n Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region to help with the fundraising goals set by the agency. There was an annual KD gala at the Centre of Hope, and the Suncor-Syncrude President’s Cup hockey game also help raise funds for the organization.

The Fort McMurray United Way press release about the fundraising campaign included a statement from the executive director of the United Way, Diane Shannon. The statement read “We are so grateful for the generosity we are witnessing, especially during these challenging times.” Just weeks ago the agency announced that they had received a much higher than expected number of funding requests from non profit organizations in the area. Approximately 32 different groups have requested funds, and the total amount of funding requested was around $7.5 million.

Spring Fling Fundraising Nets $175K for Northern Lights Regional Health Centre

Spring Fling, fundraising

The Spring Fling fundraising event held by the Northern Lights Regional Health centre has helped to raise $175,000 for local healthcare needs. The Shell Place Ballroom was the venue for the Spring Fling event, and the fundraiser was one of the first events to be held at the recently finished structure. The theme of the Fort MacMurray event was Victorian, and a number of gentlemen managed to find a top hat to wear for the occasion while the ladies donned their finest Victorian era gowns and accessories. The fundraising aspect took many avenues, with valet parking, a live auction, a silent auction, and a live donation challenge. Both auctions together raised $63,000, and the challenge raised another $19,000 and was initiated by a $5,500 donation from Markaz Ul Islam.

The Spring Fling fundraising efforts will provide a significant amount of support for the Northern Lights Health Foundation, which aims to improve healthcare in the area. The goal that the foundation set for the Spring Fling fundraising efforts was a Pulse Oximeter that will be used to monitor the blood oxygen and pulse levels of a patient. According to the executive director of the NLHF, Susanne Chaffey, “In light of the current economic conditions, we were overwhelmed with the number of companies and individuals who chose to invest in local health care through the event. We took extra measures to control expenses for the event to ensure a greater return on our investment — resulting in more impact on health services and programming.”

Local Family Fundraising to Cover Medical expenses for 4 Year Old Daughter

medical expenses, fundraising

A local family in Fort MacMurray is using GoFundMe for fundraising in order to meet the medical expenses for their 4 year old daughter. Melissa Qerimi was born with an auto immune disease called chronic idiopathic thombocyopenic purpura (ITP), and the little girl was also deaf at birth. Medical bills have been piling up, and the family must take the little girl to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton for monthly treatments. Melissa has also had bilateral cochlear implants and the family is facing mounting medical bills as a result of treatments that the child needs. According to Melissa’s mother, Fatime Qerimi,“She (had her) surgery for cochlear implants in September 2012, In a year, how much we’re spending for her is $10,000, “I’m not the type of person … to ask for help, but right now any help would be appreciated, It’s a bit of a struggle as Melissa’s medical bills are piling up plus the gas, food and expenses for cochlear implant.”

Fundraising has become necessary so that the family can afford Melissa’s medical expenses plus the usual living costs. ITP can be treated by removing the spleen because this organ breaks down platelets by producing antibodies, however this surgery is not an option until the toddler is at least 9 years old. For the next 5 years the Qerimi family will need to continue the current treatment regimen, and the cost is expensive but without the monthly treatments Melissa could die. Hopefully the Fort MacMurray community will rally around the family and help out. Recyclable can and bottle donations are also being accepted by the family.
