Radical Cleric Abu Hamza Receives Prison Sentence From US Court

Radical cleric Abu Hamza, a well known Muslim cleric who advocates violence, has received a prison sentence from a US court. In May Hamza was convicted on a number of charges that included plotting to set up a terrorism training camp in the US as well as taking hostages. Before the trial of the radical cleric could begin he had to be extradited from the UK, a lengthy process that took some time. After Abu Hamza was convicted but before he received a prison sentence his attorneys asked that the court consider the disabilities involved because the radical cleric is missing an eye and both hands. Defense attorneys argued that a prison sentence would put him in danger but a judge disagreed. An argument was also made that sending Abu Hamza to the Supermax federal prison in Colorado violated the assurances to London judges which allowed the extradition to occur.

Abu Hamza received a life prison sentence, and the judge agreed that the radical cleric could be safely imprisoned by the federal department of corrections. Prosecutors won the argument and the judge found that the government of the United States never made promises that are violated by the life prison sentence, and that this was the only possible sentence for the radical cleric. Judge Katherine Forrest used words including misguided and barbaric when she handed down the life prison sentence, and said that she could not imagine a time when he would be safe to be released. Judge Forrest also stated that the decision about where Abu Hamaz was imprisoned would be left to federal correction officials.

Hayat Boumeddiene, Terror Suspect’s Widow, Sought by French Police for Questioning

Hayat Boumeddiene, the terror suspect’s widow who may have been involved in the grocery store siege that resulted in Amedy Coulibaly being killed by police, is wanted for questioning. Police believe that Boumeddiene may have knowledge that can help bring down a terror network in France. Citizens are warned that Hayat should be considered dangerous and that she may be armed, and police are asking everyone to look for her and report any sightings immediately. Amedy Coulibaly and Hayat Boumeddiene were married in July of 2009 by an Islamic ceremony that was religious in nature. The laws of France do not recognize this type of union. Four hostages were killed in the supermarket siege in Paris before police ended it by killing Amedy.

French officials have said that Hayat Boumeddiene, the terror suspect’s widow who is wanted for questioning, does not have a criminal record. Hayat has been questioned before by police about terrorist activities, and she was on the government’s radar but not as a high threat. Officials do know that Hayat Boumeddiene has close ties to Islamic radicals that are monitored by the French internal security services, and there has been a photo of her published that shows her holding a crossbow and wearing an Islamic veil. This picture was taken after her religious ceremony with Amedy. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins stated Friday that the discovery of around 500 phone calls between Hayat Boumeddiene and a female who was a known companion to the Kouchi brothers made the link between the two extremists clearer.

George Zimmerman, the man responsible for the death of Trayvon Martin who was acquitted under the Florida Stand Your Ground Law because he had injuries and acted in self defense, has been arrested again. At 9:45 pm on Friday night George Zimmerman was booked shortly after arrest at the Sanford John E. Polk Correctional Facility, and he was scheduled to appear before a judge Saturday morning. Police were called to a residence for a domestic violence dispute and that was when Zimmerman was arrested. Seminole County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Cannaday told reporters “It will most likely be a domestic violence charge.” When George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin on a rainy night he was acting as a neighborhood watch, and there were visible injuries showing that there was a scuffle between Zimmerman and Martin. Witnesses said that Martin was on top of Zimmerman and doing a ground and pound, and that was when George shot the teenager.

This is not the first time that George Zimmerman has been arrested or suspected of aggravated assault since he shot Trayvon Martin in Florida. This is the second time that there have been domestic violence allegations against Zimmerman, with the first incident occurring with his wife and father in law after the couple separated and she took her father with her to get some belongings. George was also questioned when a former girlfriend said he pointed a gun at her, but no charges were ever filed against him. Zimmerman was also stopped in both Florida and Texas for speeding.

The Kouachi brothers have been killed after an intense French manhunt, and others have also been identified as radical extremists as a result. Citizens of France lived in terror for 3 days as law enforcement searched for the Kouachi brothers who were responsible for the Charlie Hebdo massacre. When 3 gunmen entered the newspaper office after threatening a female staffer and her daughter if the woman did not enter the code they opened fire, killing 12 staff members of the publication and wounding others. The gunmen were the Kouachi brothers and their 18 year old brother in law. On Friday the two brothers took a hostage at a printing company to the north of Paris, where they were killed during the siege. Police have since determined that the subjects of the French manhunt had assistance from others with radicalized views.

On Thursday, one day after the Charlie Hebdo attack, Amedy Coulibaly shot a police woman, and on Friday Coulibaly and possibly his wife by Islamic ceremony Hayat Boumeddiene took hostages in a small grocery store. Coulibaly told journalists that he coordinated his attacks with the brothers before he was killed. After the French manhunt for the Kouachi brothers ended both men were dead, along with one accomplice. Police are still searching for Boumeddiene who has disappeared, and they are saying she should be considered dangerous and possibly armed. Police in France are asking every citizen to be vigilant, both to locate the widow of Coulibaly and to report any suspicious activity to prevent copycat acts by other radicals.

The Kouachi brothers, along with their 18 year old brother in law Hamyd Mourad, stormed the offices of the newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris Wednesday. 12 people were killed in the attack when masked gunmen went through shooting staff in the office, and others were injured. The entire city is mourning those who died and keeping a lookout for French terror suspects Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi. Mourad turned himself in the same day of the attacks, but the brothers are still on the run. The police have released photos of both brothers and they are asking people to look for them and call the police if they see them.

The massive manhunt for French terror suspects Said Kouachi and Cherif Kouachi is going strong. After the petrol station robbery police set up roadblocks in the area, and barriers have been put in police. Two men who fit the description of the Kouachi brothers stole petrol and food from a petrol station close to Villers-Cotteret which is east of Paris. Media reports also say that the brothers are traveling in a Renault Chic, and that they had weapons in the back seat of the vehicle. Seven people have been been detained as part of the investigation after police raided an apartment in Reims, France. It is suspected that the two French terror suspects have ties to a terrorist organization in Yemen.

Stéphane Charbonnier, Charlie Hebdo Editor, on Terrorist Hit List for Years

Stéphane Charbonnier, terrorist hit list, Charlie Hebdo editor

Stéphane Charbonnier, the Charlie Hebdo editor who was killed in the terror attack on the newspaper offices in Paris on Wednesday, has been on a terror hit list for at least two years as a result of the publications that were run which involved satire and the Islamic prophet Mohammed. Most Muslims consider it offensive to make fun of the prophet or to say anything derogatory about Mohammed, and many radicals consider even a depiction of the revered prophet as blasphemy punishable by death. Stéphane Charbonnier published satire pieces in spite of this, a a form of freedom of expression, and Islam was just one of several religions covered. The newspaper also published satirical pieces about government officials as well, and Charbonnier never let fear hamper his actions or his views.

Two years ago Stéphane Charbonnier was put on a terrorist hit list by a Yemen terror association linked to Al-Qaida. This was after the Charlie Hebdo editor had published cartoons about Mohammed. The website run by the terrorist organization listed Stéphane Charbonnier with the caption WANTED Dead or Alive for Crimes against Islam two years ago, putting a price on the editor’s head but not forcing him to hide in fear. Unfortunately a young mother who worked at the secure newspaper office was returning from a daycare where she picked up her young daughter, and hooded gunmen threatened her and her child until she entered the security code for the office so that the gunmen could enter. Once the attackers were in the office they openly fired at everyone, killing 12 people and wounding others.
