Juvenile Charged With Aggravated Assault After Stabbing Cab Driver

juvenile, aggravated assault, cab driver

Last Monday morning the Wood Buffalo RCMP received a report of an aggravated assault on a cab driver, and the attacker was a young juvenile. The call came in at around 3:30 am on February 16, and he incident occurred close to downtown Fort MacMurray along the side of highway 63. According to Cst. Mylene Michon of the RCMP “Along Highway 63 in the downtown area, somebody saw a physical altercation between a male and a cab driver. We can confirm that a [young offender] was charged with aggravated assault and fail to comply with conditions.” The male juvenile has not been identified, but it was confirmed that he was 15 years old. The cab driver was a male in his mid 30s, and he was stabbed by the juvenile during the altercation.

The stabbing and aggravated assault of a cab driver by a 15 year old juvenile is a cause for concern in Fort MacMurray. The law does not allow the juvenile to be named because he is a minor, however his crime was an adult crime that was serious and violent. Are the juvenile laws no longer sufficient? Younger teenagers are committing violent crimes today, and the juvenile justice system is not always equipped to handle dangerous and violent offenders. These are not kids who steal some candy or go for a joyride, and some believe that they should be tried in an adult court because of the seriousness of their actions. The cab driver in this case required treatment at the local hospital after being stabbed, and the outcome could have been much different. Do you think the juvenile justice system coddles violent teens?

George Zimmerman, the man responsible for the death of Trayvon Martin who was acquitted under the Florida Stand Your Ground Law because he had injuries and acted in self defense, has been arrested again. At 9:45 pm on Friday night George Zimmerman was booked shortly after arrest at the Sanford John E. Polk Correctional Facility, and he was scheduled to appear before a judge Saturday morning. Police were called to a residence for a domestic violence dispute and that was when Zimmerman was arrested. Seminole County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kim Cannaday told reporters “It will most likely be a domestic violence charge.” When George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin on a rainy night he was acting as a neighborhood watch, and there were visible injuries showing that there was a scuffle between Zimmerman and Martin. Witnesses said that Martin was on top of Zimmerman and doing a ground and pound, and that was when George shot the teenager.

This is not the first time that George Zimmerman has been arrested or suspected of aggravated assault since he shot Trayvon Martin in Florida. This is the second time that there have been domestic violence allegations against Zimmerman, with the first incident occurring with his wife and father in law after the couple separated and she took her father with her to get some belongings. George was also questioned when a former girlfriend said he pointed a gun at her, but no charges were ever filed against him. Zimmerman was also stopped in both Florida and Texas for speeding.

The man who committed aggravated assault and perpetrated an acid attack against his ex girlfriend has entered a guilty plea, and will be sentenced for the crime that he has plead guilty to. The acid attack happened in August of 2012, and the victim Tanya St. Arnauld was severely injured and came very close to dying. The defendant in the case is Nikolas Stefanatos, and he has been in detention since he was arrested for the aggravated assault in 2013. 30 year old Tanya St. Arnauld was standing on the steps in front of her Longueuil apartment when Nikolas Stefanatos dowsed her with acidic concrete cleaner, leaving her with more than 20% of her body burned and in a coma.

Since the acid attack Tanya St. Arnauld has had to endure a number of surgeries and skin grafts which cause excruciating pain, and she still bears physical and psychological scars from the aggravated assault on her that day. The guilty plea of Nikolas Stefanatos will not undue the trauma and pain of her experience, but St. Arnauld has started to move forward. The woman remembers the acid attack, and screaming hysterically as she ran into the apartment of a neighbor for help. Tanya St. Arnauld talked about when she thought she would die, saying “I thought about the little things, that I hadn’t seen my mother that day, my regrets, things I’d missed. The things you take for granted … it’s taken away in a split second. Every detail, every sound, even the acid smell … that’s what I see all day,”

Crime in and around Fort MacMurray is not bad when certain areas are avoided but it does happen. The Wood Buffalo RCMP recently arrested 3 men and charged them with aggravated assault on Wednesday, August 20. The charges stem from an incident in Conklin that occurred approximately one week before the arrests were made. On August 13 a complaint was called in around 2 am in the morning of an aggravated assault which had occurred at the Conklin residence. When police arrived at the residence to investigate the aggravated assault they found two males who were victims. One of the males had been stabbed while the other had a gunshot wound. Both victims were taken to hospitals for treatment, and both reported to RCMP that a physical altercation had taken place at the residence.

After the initial investigation law enforcement determined that an aggravated assault had occurred, and while this was not a crime in Fort MacMurray it hits close to home in the local community. On Wednesday, August 20, police arrested 3 suspects who were believed to be involved in the aggravated assault. 21 year old Kurtis Richards, a Conklin resident, was charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and discharging a firearm with intent. 19 year old Trevor Powder, a resident of La Biche, was charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. 48 year old Raymond Richards Sr, a Conklin resident, was also charged for the incident and was arrested for possession of a prohibited weapon and assault with a weapon for pepper spray which was used.
