Meghan Markle Just Wore a Cape Dress Fit for Actual Queens
Saturday was packed with royal activities for a certain Meghan Markle. She attended the Invictus Games Sydney reception in London early in the day with fiancé Prince Harry, and then the royal-to-be headed to her second official event with Queen Elizabeth II: the monarch’s 92nd birthday party. On Saturday night, the royal family gathered for a celebratory concert, to which Meghan wore a cape dress that looked fit for a queen. And, as it turns out, it actually is.
The Queen’s birthday concert was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where performers included Kylie Minogue, Sting, Shaggy, Shawn Mendes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Anne-Marie, Craig David, Sir Tom Jones, and Donel Mangena. BBC One and BBC Radio 2 televised the concert, and proceeds went to a new charity called The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which will help “encourage young people to excel in areas like sports, education, health and the environment across the 53 Commonwealth countries,” according to People. (Prince Harry is the organization’s president, by the way.)

For the celebration, Meghan wore a $1,625 navy Stella McCartney Crewneck Cape-Front Belted Short Dress, along with a pair of $625 navy Manolo Blahnik BB Pointy Toe Pumps, and a Naeem Khan Armory Zodiac Clutch that rang in at $3,390. She looked—as usual—stunning in the streamlined look, which was a return to her more neutral style after she wore a bright green floral Self-Portrait dress earlier in the day.

This timeless cape dress style has popped up frequently in royal circles, too: Queen Mathilde of Belgium wore a similar cape dress in bright blue in 2014…

…and Queen Letizia of Spain wore a similar one in green in 2016, as well as a floor-length Stella McCartney in red in 2017.

This confirms it: Meghan is so ready to be royal—and there are only 27 more days until it’s official.
