Celebrities Who Rarely Show Their Curly Hair
Salma Hayek’s been experimenting with a few colorful wigs lately, but she’s typically photographed with her mid-length, dark brown hair blown-out or straightened. Until now: She showed off her natural curls in a selfie on Instagram—and her followers fell in love with them. “Crazy hair day. A veces mi cabello se vuelve loco ?,” she captioned the post, which translates to “sometimes my hair goes crazy.” Please. It looks great.
Washington’s worn her hair all sorts of ways, but where she’s most often spotted with a sharp bob or glossy waves, this weekend she went curly to an event in LA. Casual glam on a Sunday, as only Washington could.
Grande’s taken a stand for her go-to pony and half-up half-down style, so glimpses of her born-with-’em curls are all the more exciting. Those soft, gorgeous waves, that vogueing—it’s a match made in heaven.
Sarah Hyland
You wouldn’t know it from the Modern Family star’s red carpet appearances—where she usually wears her hair in blown-out waves—but when Hyland’s off-duty, we often get to see her incredible natural curls, as spotted here.
Henson’s shiny, angled Empire bob is iconic, but her magnificent kinks came out to play this year, and the world hasn’t been the same. The story behind them is just as good: Per her hairstylist, Tym Wallace, after wrapping her latest movie, Henson wanted to go all or nothing to help her curls thrive. “She’s showing that she’s all for black-girl magic,” he said. “Showing these young black girls that you are not defined by what society paints as beautiful when it comes to a black woman and her hair.”
Sightings of Joan Smalls’ natural hair texture are few and far between, but when she posted this shot and captioned it “#WBW Natural,” the heart emojis poured in. If you’re not currently a teen or an incredibly hip model, that stands for “way back when.” We looked it up.
After years of being curly, for a bit there Lorde was sticking with smoother waves and shiny blowouts (her choice, but we were bummed to see them less). But lately she’s been bringing back her corkscrews, both in their defined form and gorgeously frizzed-out state.
With the launch of her new hair care line, Flawless by Gabrielle Union, the actress has been on a curl kick recently and embracing her natural texture. And fingers crossed it never, ever ends, because seeing Union’s kinks is even more gut-punch beautiful than looking at her skin. (How is she 44? How. How?!)
Instagramming in Venice with her daughter, Luna, Teigen gave a rare glimpse at her texture. Peeking out from a turban, it could be because the coastal humidity isn’t worth fighting, but we’re still hoping we see more when she’s back in L.A.
Cox never ceases to be an inspiration, and her comment on finally accepting her hair is so good. “Wearing my hair natural with its beautiful kink and curl on the daily is a bit too much work for me. I usually opt for protective styles, wigs, and hairpieces for my everyday styles,” she captioned the photo on Instagram. “But when we did this shoot, this is the look I was most excited about. I haven’t relaxed my hair since 2011. My natural hair journey continues, and I want to celebrate that as much as the other looks we rock. I also want to celebrate my natural hair sisters. I love you!”
Ora’s curl story is the hair equivalent of the quote “I fell in love like you would fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” She wore her hair straight for years, but ever since snapping a rare shot of her natural texture a few months ago, they’ve been making a few more appearances. A love story for the ages (us and her curls—Ora’s hair relationship is her own).
Slate’s gone long on her relationship with her hair before, and her take is incredibly relatable for anyone who’s felt conflicted about embracing their texture. She still often tends to go for straight looks for the red carpet, so when she popped up with this updo, we couldn’t look away.
After years on years of smoothly coiffed waves as Spencer Hastings on PLL, Bellisario’s naturally curly hair made a reappearance for the debut of her new movie. The reaction: pure ?.
Hudgens typically wears her hair in smooth, shiny waves, but her less coiffed curls still come out every once in a while.
As someone who’s been famous for about 30 years now, Berry’s stood by her pixie cut through thick and thin (and looked excellent while doing it). But at this year’s Oscars, she turned up with an incredible, breath-taking ’fro. While most of her looks since then have stayed in wavy territory, the curl sighting was one of the most exciting parts of the night. Say what you will about the card mix-up.
After doctors told her she had an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s disease, Lewis decided to take her beauty routine to a stripped down, natural place and champion her natural texture. She’s written that meant rebelling against what the world perceives as “polished,” but clearly, the world didn’t know what it was talking about.
