Wood Buffalo RCMP Investigates ATV Accident Resulting in Death

ATV accident, Wood Buffalo RCMP

The Wood Buffalo RCMP was investigating an ATV accident that resulted in a death in the area of Saprae Creek. The death involved a 57 year old man, and the accident was reported at approximately 9:50 pm on April 28. The accident occurred southeast of Fort MacMurray and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators in the case report that the 57 year old man was riding ATVs with some friends in the area. One of the vehicles became stuck and the man was attempting to help pull it free with his ATV. The man lost control of his vehicle when going downhill. The driver was not wearing a helmet and when he lost control he went over the handlebars of the vehicle. The ATV then landed on him and caused serious head trauma.

According to the Wood Buffalo RCMP the ATV accident is not suspected to have been caused by alcohol although the investigation is continuing. The driver was from the local Saprae Creek region. The ATV accident is a reminder to everyone who enjoys these types of outdoor activities how important wearing a helmet can be. As the temperatures warm up and nice weather becomes typical in Wood Buffalo more people will be spending time outside. This means more opportunities for injuries and accidents to occur, especially if the proper safety equipment is not utilized.. The ATV accident appears to be just that though, and it is not known whether the driver would have fared better if he had been wearing a helmet due t the nature and cause of his injuries.

Wood Buffalo RCMP Officer Faces Criminal Charges

Wood Buffalo RCMP, criminal charges

A local Wood Buffalo RCMP officer is facing criminal charges after allegedly selling police investigation information. According to reports by the RCMP on March 25, 2015 Cst. Kyle Gordon Harrison was placed under arrest when allegations were made that Harrison took money in exchange for providing information from the official police database to an unknown individual. Bribery and breach of trust are two of the charges that may stick against the officer if he is found guilty of providing the information and taking money for this. According to Insp. Gibson Glavin the source’s identity and the time of the alleged incidents can not be released yet because the case has not been presented to trial at this early date, however Glavin did say that there was more than one occurrence suspected over an unspecified period of time.

According to Wood Buffalo RCMP Insp. Gibson Glavin “We’re not going to be able to release the specific instance that brought this to our attention because that’s going to form a significant part of the evidence at trial.” he said. The database which was breached by the officer facing criminal charges contains data on information collected during the course of investigations that the RCMP conducted, and privacy legislation protects the information that was accessed and given out by the officer who is charged. “We recognize that the only way that police can properly do our business is if the public has confidence in us and trusts us, so getting on these things quickly is partly how we do that. This member of the RCMP will have an opportunity to have this heard at court, and there’ll be a decision as to whether that’s proved or not at that point.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP Investigating Thickewood Breaking and Entering

Wood Buffalo RCMP, Thickewood, Breaking and Entering

The Wood Buffalo RCMP is investigating a recent Thickewood breaking and entering, and they are asking for help from the public to identify the individual responsible. The crime occurred during the very early hours of the morning on February 17, and the burglar alarm system alerted police that a breaking and entering took place. When the police responded and arrived on scene they found the Wolverine Drive Shoppers Drug Mart in Thickewood had been broken into. Details on what the male suspect took have not been released, police have only disclosed that the criminal did take some undisclosed items before fleeing, and he was gone when police arrived at the store. The RCMP is asking the public to look at the surveillance video and help identify the individual who committed this crime.

So far the Wood Buffalo RCMP have not disclosed a motive for the Thickwood breaking and entering, bu the fact that the store targeted was a drug store has made some wonder if the suspect was hoping to access and steal prescription medications that have a high potential for abuse, such as narcotic pain killers or anxiety medications. Anyone who has any information about this crime should contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP and tell them what you know. This time the target was a drug store, but next time it could be a residence that is occupied when the breaking and entering happens. Someone knows who this suspect is and recognizes the picture, and the police are asking this person to come forward and contact them.

The streets that we marched on, there were people (on) both sides. A lot of people had signs of support, which is really nice to see.”

The funeral march to honor RCMP Cst David Wynn and all first responders brought large crowds who showed their support for those who are often the first ones in the line of fire. Cpl. George Cameron of the Wood Buffalo RCMP continued by saying “There was of course, marching, you’re hearing thank yous, we support you. And when they say you, they’re talking about all policemen, not just RCMP, so it’s kind of nice to hear that from the public, sure,. I’d like to thank the members of the public for the tremendous support, it’s a sombre occasion. It was basically a thank-you to all first responders, firefighters, paramedics, you name it. It’s just unfortunate that it takes that for everyone to get together, but there was certainly a feel of cameraderieship or something like that. It was very nice to see.”
