I Wear One Type of Summer Dress, and This Is It

Now that temperatures are soaring well above 90 degrees, the age-old question of “what does one wear in this type of heat?” is back and lingering. But whenever someone asks, I share what has been my proudest fashion discovery: the perfect dress style to beat the heat but still look stylish.

Years ago, when I was a junior editor, a friend forced me into trying a flowy, mid-length number by Rebecca Taylor. It was light blue, with a feather print all over the chiffon fabric. It had 3/4-length sleeves, a nip at the waist, and a slight asymmetrical hem that—and this is crucial—sat somewhere between the knee and the ankle, slightly longer than the traditional “midi.” It didn’t take long for this hemline to become my length of choice for those beyond-sweltering days where you’re still expected to look put-together. (Side note: Rebecca Taylor is still one of my go-to brands for these type of dresses.)

You might think that less-is-more when it comes to summer dressing—less fabric, less skirt, etc. But I’ve found that this length actually provides more breeze and movement, and prevents uncomfortable sweat and sticking; plus, you don’t have to worry about your dress riding up, or having sweaty limbs stick every time you sit down. You don’t need to over-embellish, either: Add a sneaker for daytime, flat sandal for work, or heels for an evening out.

Hurry up and scroll down to find out edit of the best midi-ish dresses currently on the market.

Summer Nail Polish Colors to Try for Your Next Pedicure

One of the best things about summer—right behind the Fourth of July sales, the joy of setting your out-of-office message to go on vacation, and all the new shoes—is the fun that comes with landing on the perfect pedicure shade now that your feet can finally see the light of day. This, of course, is easier said than done when you’re standing in front of a hundred options at the nail salon, which is why we polled everyone around the office to share what they’ve been wearing. If you’re anything like our editors, your primal impulse is probably to grab something colorful and bright. But if punchy pinks and corals aren’t your thing, a few staffers also make a strong case for summer darks and neutrals with a kick. (I’m all about a moody purple year-round, personally, but—hey—to each her own.) So if you find yourself stuck staring at the same bottle during your next pedi run, here are 12 of our favorite summer nail colors for toes, below.
