Simone Biles Wants to Join the Navarro Squad From Netflix's 'Cheer'

Cheer-mania continues to sweep the nation—and the world’s greatest gymnast, Simone Biles, is ready to get in on the action.

The six-episode Netflix documentary series, featuring one of the country’s top cheerleading squads, is a an emotional ride and a testament to the athletic ability of competitive cheerleaders. Seriously, how do they do all of that flipping and flying? And, now, Biles says she’d like to join the Navarro College squad. “Netflix series CHEER had me convinced after 2020 I’m trying out for Navarro Cheer,” she tweeted. Of course, she’s got a little competition called the Olympics coming up this summer in Tokyo, but she obviously has the skill set to make it on mat.

“I showed this tweet to @monicaaldama, @Lexi_Brumback, @Jerry_K2TR, @MorganSimianer, @GabiButlerCheer, @L_Marshall17 today and they said, YOU’RE IN!” the official Netflix account tweeted in reply, tagging coach Monica Aldama and the members of the squad prominently featured in Cheer. “Welcome to the team!!! ❤️❤️❤️,” Aldama added in a separate tweet.

Biles isn’t the only celebrity obsessed with the crew from Navarro—a small junior college in Corsicana, Texas—though she might be the only one who could jump right in and make the team as a flyer. “When Coach Monica said she had a lot of career choices but all she wanted to do was coach these @NavarroCollege Cheerleaders, I started to think about all the female coaches who we never see in movies or TV that are changing kids lives. And I cried again ! ?#CheerNetflix,” Reese Witherspoon previously tweeted. “I’m a Lexi with a La’Darius moon and Gabi Butler rising. You? #CheerNetflix,” Lena Dunham penned on Twitter. And the queen of social media, Chrissy Teigen, even made an entire Cheer parody.

Even NFL superstar JJ Watt is a fan. “Kealia: I’ve heard people say CHEER on Netflix is really good, we should watch it. Me: I guess we can give it a shot. Me 2 episodes in: JERRY HARRIS IS THE HEART AND SOUL OF NAVARRO COLLEGE CHEERLEADING. IF HE DOESN’T MAKE THE MAT, I WILL RIOT,” he enthusiastically tweeted.

While there is obviously a huge appetite for the show, a second season has not been officially announced by Netflix. “We don’t really know anything about [season 2] right now,” Aldama told Us Weekly. “So we’re just excited to be here right now and have season 1 and just the love and support of season 1. So, we’ll see.”

And maybe, just maybe, we’ll also get a cameo from Simone Biles.

Taylor Swift Says She's Officially 'Outgrown' Her Squad

A few short years ago, no one could think of Taylor Swift without thinking of her squad—that is, the crew of women who made frequent surprise appearances at her concerts and on Instagram, including Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss, and Cara Delevingne. The squad appeared to dissolve during Swift’s Reputation era, which left fans wondering whether Swift and her posse were no longer friends. For some of those friendships, that is the case—and Swift just explained why.

In a new cover essay for Elle, Swift opened up about 30 lessons she’s learned in her twenties. (Swift turns 30 in November.) One big takeaway? Some of those famous squad friendships weren’t so lasting.

Taylor Swift accepted her 2015 VMAs with squad members Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss.

Swift describes these as “situationships,” which she has since outgrown. “Something about ‘we’re in our young twenties!’ hurls people together into groups that can feel like your chosen family,” she wrote. “And maybe they will be for the rest of your life. Or maybe they’ll just be your comrades for an important phase, but not forever. It’s sad but sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships. You may leave behind friendships along the way, but you’ll always keep the memories.”

Swift didn’t drop names in her essay, but a glance at her social media presence can give you an idea of who she’s spending time with now. She added that surrounding herself with a squad of friends came from insecurities she had as a kid. “Never being popular as a kid was always an insecurity for me,” she explained. “Even as an adult, I still have recurring flashbacks of sitting at lunch tables alone or hiding in a bathroom stall, or trying to make a new friend and being laughed at.”

So when the opportunity came for Swift to throw giant 4th of July parties with a crew of models and actresses, she went for it. “In my twenties I found myself surrounded by girls who wanted to be my friend,” she wrote. “So I shouted it from the rooftops, posted pictures, and celebrated my newfound acceptance into a sisterhood, without realizing that other people might still feel the way I did when I felt so alone.”

Swift added that she knows who her true friends (and fans) are today: “the ones who stuck around” during her feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and the following Reputation era. “I learned that I have friends and fans in my life who don’t care if I’m #canceled. They were there in the worst times and they’re here now.”

This essay is the latest entry in Swift’s slow return to social media and the public eye. In recent months, she’s showed up at a few events, wrote a second essay for Elle UK‘s April issue, and hinted that new music is on its way. She’s also shared a few looks at her current friendships, including a hangout with Selena Gomez and Cazzie David. Fans are confident that this return to social media and the public eye all point to a new album and era for Swift—but if her essay is to be believed, the resurrection of the Swift squad won’t come with it.

Here's Photographic Proof That Taylor Swift's Squad Is Back in Action

Taylor Swift‘s squad is back in action: A crew of T.Swift’s best friends convened over the weekend for a few days of squad love and music, and it’s just like old times again.

Gigi Hadid, Victoria’s Secret model Martha Hunt, and Este Haim flew to Pennsylvania to see Swift’s Reputation tour show in Philadelphia on Friday night (the singer also performed there on Saturday). Although it’s been a while since updates about T.Swift’s squad activities made the news daily (and we weren’t blessed with one of Swift’s iconic friend-filled Fourth of July parties this year), we’re still keeping up with her friendships. Swift cooked dinner for Tiffany Haddish after they filmed SNL together late last year, and it seems that her and Selena Gomez, as well as Karlie Kloss, are still kicking it together.

Back to the present: “If I could find the words, I would explain how happy it makes me to watch you perform @taylorswift,” Hadid wrote on a photo she posted at Swift’s concert on Friday to her Instagram. “I’m so proud to experience this celebration of clarity & strength with you. WHAT A SHOW. You did it again. Love you to the moon.”

A fan posted videos of Hadid fangirling during Swift’s set, and it pretty much is all of us when we’re proud of our besties:

Hunt also shared a cute shot of her with Haim, and Swift’s other friends, Ashley Avignone and Kennedy Rayé Black, who also attended the concert:

Before traveling to the show, Swift and her girls hung out at her New York City apartment—and, according to EW, after leaving NYC, they also made a pit stop in Swift’s hometown of Reading, where they took a pretty adorable photo in her childhood bedroom. “Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room…” Swift captioned it.

We’re here for all of this—T.Swift, just let us know when the next baking party is. We’ll clear our cals.
