Mariska Hargitay’s Response to Chris Meloni Bringing Back Elliot Stabler Will Make Your Day

Yesterday news broke that Christopher Meloni is returning to television as Elliot Stabler in a new Law & Order spin-off. And his former costar, Mariska Hargitay, seems as happy about it as the rest of us.

She posted a sweet birthday and congratulations message to her former partner-in-solving-crime to Instagram on April 2. “Happy Birthday @chris_meloni Congratulations and welcome home Elliot Stabler #It’sBeenAWhile #MissedYou #ElliotStabler,” she wrote. And Meloni responded, “Saddle up gurl, we ridin agin. And TY for all the BD wishes.”

Christopher Meloni starred as the tough New York cop Elliot Stabler for 12 seasons before leaving Law & Order: SVU in 2011, while Mariska Hargitay has remained on the show, currently in its 21st season, as Olivia Benson. The show has remained popular in its prime time slot on NBC but can also be found in reruns on basic cable at almost any hour of the day.

While we don’’t have many details on Meloni’s new show yet, it seems from the two stars’ Instagram banter that a Benson-and-Stabler reunion is very possible. The new show sees Stabler heading up New York City’s organized crime unit. Benson, meanwhile, currently runs the special victims unit. Because both characters will now be in New York, it’s not far-fetched to think a crossover moment could happen. Ahhh!

Fans rejoiced about Meloni’s return on social media. “Elliot Stabler is back in the SVU universe. We DESERVE a reunion with Olivia Benson. SVU ship sailing again. You can’t tell me nothing, honey. #BensonandStabler,” one fan tweeted. “I cant believe it’s 2020 the world is ending and Stabler is trending bc he’s coming back to TV and it’s not SVU. Blessed. Grateful,” another wrote.

There’s no word yet on when the show will debut, but we’ll be there. Dun dun.

Christopher Meloni’s New Elliot Stabler TV Show: Everything We Know

TV hasn’t been the same since Christopher Meloni left NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2011. His character, Elliot Stabler, was beloved and the perfect foil to Mariska Hargitay’s iconic Olivia Benson.

If you have similar thoughts, then I have some very good news: According to Variety, Christopher Meloni is returning to NBC’s small screen—as Elliot Stabler. No, unfortunately, he’s not coming back to SVU. Instead, Law & Order creator Dick Wolf has reportedly made a brand-new show completely centered on Stabler. (This is all coming from Deadline and sources who spoke to Variety. NBC has not commented directly…yet.)

Details about the series are scarce at this point. It likely won’t go into production for a while due to both the coronavirus and the fact that the project is still in early development. But Meloni has officially signed on. Here’s what else we know about the series:

The show length: It’s been green-lit for 13 episodes.

The premise: SVU wrote Stabler off as retiring from the police force. This new show will see him heading up the NYPD’s organized crime unit.

The cast: Unknown at this point, except for Meloni. But the show will take place in New York, leaving plenty of opportunity for crossovers with SVU and perhaps a few appearances from Hargitay.

In 2017, Meloni opened up about the dynamic between Stabler and Benson, saying, “In retrospect, it was such a no-brainer. [Mariska told me], ‘You’re the archetype father, and I’m the mama. I’m the nurturer, so that’s a form of protection.’ And then you have the father, who’s going to kick someone’s ass if you eff with the woman or the children. It’s what people want: They want that sense of justice in this form of violence that is so unjust.”

We’ll keep you posted with more details as they roll in.
