The Paris massacre of 12 people at the newspaper Charlie Hebdo has elicited sincere condolences from Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch of England who is 88 years old. These condolences were meant for the wounded, their families, and the families of those who were murdered by terrorist gunmen who stormed the newspaper officers. A young mother admitted the gunmen unintentionally, and she was terrorized along with her young daughter during the attack. The newspaper editor was one of those killed, and the gunmen responsible fled in a vehicle before police arrived. The message sent from the English monarch read “Prince Philip and I send our sincere condolences to the families of those who have been killed and to those who have been injured in the attack in Paris this morning. We send our thoughts and prayers to all those who have been affected.”

Queen Elizabeth II sent her condolences over the Paris massacre from Sandringham House, the official royal residence which is used during the winter break. Queen Elizabeth II is not the only one to speak out about the Paris massacre, leaders from around the globe have been very outspoken in their criticism. It is commonly believed that the extremist gunmen targeted the newspaper because of publications in the past which depicted the prophet Mohammed. These publications inflamed Muslims and resulted in numerous threats from radicalized Muslims in the past. The condolences from Queen Elizabeth show that the entire world is in the fight against terrorism together and we must support one another.

Masked Gunmen Commit Paris Terrorist Attack Wednesday Morning

In a Paris terrorist attack Wednesday masked gunmen killed 12 people after storming into a weekly newspaper which had used controversial prophet Mohammed caricatures in the past. One of those killed was the editor of the paper, and the masked gunmen escaped in a vehicle after committing the attack. Leaders from around the globe have condemned the Paris attack, with United States President Barack Obama calling it an act of cowardice. The attackers spoke flawless French without any noticeable accent, and they were yelling Allahu Akbar as they ran through the newspaper office shooting staff. The Charlie Hebdo newspaper had printed a number of controversial publications in the past that Muslims found offensive. In defense of the newspaper it had also included satire and poked fun at other religions as well as political figures and government officials.

Charlie Hebdo had been the target of threats in the past from extremists and radicals, but this did not stop the newspaper. Wednesday’s Paris terrorist attack by masked gunmen may have the opposite effect of what extremists intended though. With the entire world condemning the act of violence as barbaric and cowardly the terrorists did not achieve their desired intentions. Instead of creating fear they have united most of the globe into outrage, and this will only increase acts of defiance by other publications as well. All religions hold their deities sacred, but to murder in the name of any deity is wrong. This act of violence has only strengthened the resolve of the USA, Canada, and other countries to stand strong against extremists rather than giving in to terrorism.

Searchers and recovery personnel have found wreckage from the missing AirAsia plane, pulling debris and bodies from the ocean where the airliner went down. According to searchers some of the bodies were still strapped into the seats on the plane, showing that whatever happened occurred fairly quickly. Reports have detailed a request from the plane to change altitude due to the weather, but this request was denied because there was other air traffic in the area. Shortly after the request to change altitude was received the plane disappeared, leading to an extensive search in order to find out what happened to the aircraft. Relatives of those missing were tearful as they watched television footage of the bodies being removed from the ocean, and families may not get news until the bodies can be identified and autopsied.

According to a Navy spokesperson involved in removing wreckage from the missing AirAsia plane explained that the debris and bodies were being removed by helicopter for testing, saying “The challenge is waves up to three metres high.” Recovery efforts are expected to continue for some time and many families are still in limbo because their loved ones have not been recovered and identified yet. According to the airlines “a dedicated team of care providers will be assigned to each family to ensure that all of their needs are met.” The rest of the world is grieving along with the families, and many countries have offered to help Indonesia in their search and recovery efforts.

Murder charges have been filed against the parents in Florida in the case of an infant starvation death. The 22 day old baby died from starvation and both parents of the infant have been charged with first degree murder. For most people the thought of neglecting a newborn in any way is unacceptable, and to allow an infant to starve to death is inexcusable. According to the assistant chief of the Lakeland Police Mike Link”She suffered tremendously over the 22 days that she was alive.” According to police the photographs of the baby are very disturbing, and the medical examiner determined that the baby girl was murdered by starvation due to neglect. When the infant was weighed in death she weighed roughly two and a half pounds less than at birth, and she had not been fed much for the previous 24 hours before dying.

First degree murder charges in the Florida infant starvation case are warranted according to the medical examiner, and an infant lost her life because she was not valued or loved by her mother. After being confronted with the facts the mother of the infant admitted that the baby had not been fed much during the day long trip to Florida, and that it was difficult to feed the infant because they would have to exit the highway in order to do so. The baby girl had an appointment with a physician before the trip but the mother failed to keep the appointment. The male half of the couple, Roy Stephens, is not the biological father of the infant and did not have much to do with the baby according to the mother. Two other children aged 1 and 2 were also with the couple, and these children were taken into protective custody.

The Taliban Pakistani school killings have sparked widespread condemnation around the world, and the attack was the worst in many years for a war torn country. According to reports 126 were killed, almost all of them children and teenagers. The school is a military run institution but many of the students are civilians. The attack was carried out by a small number of militants and shocked the entire world because most of those killed were young and innocent. Tahir Ali, whose 14 year old son was killed during the attack, told journalists at the hospital where he arrived to pick up his son’s body “My son was in uniform in the morning. He is in a casket now. My son was my dream. My dream has been killed.”

The Pakistani school killings involved a brutality that is incomprehensible to almost anyone. The fact that the terrorists gunned down children and young teenagers for no reason at all is horrifying, and 126 children dead is a tragedy. Mohammed Khurasani, who is a spokesman for the Taliban, told the media in a phone interview that the group was responsible for the Pakistani school killings. According to Khurasani the act of terrorism was to retaliate for Taliban deaths by Pakistani authorities. The students who were killed had no role in these deaths, they were innocent of any crimes. Many suspect that the Taliban targeted a school and killed 126 students in order to gain global attention because the group knew that the act would shock and horrify the rest of the world.
