The latest Mohammed cartoon by Charlie Hebdo, which was published on Wednesday, has been condemned by the Egypt Islamic Authority which has called it a provocation. According to a statement by the Dar al-Ifta “This action is an unjustified provocation against the feelings of 1.5 billion Muslims. This (magazine) edition will result in a new wave of hatred in French and Western society. What the magazine is doing does not serve co-existence and the cultural dialogue Muslims aspire to.” The statement continued by saying “We call on all Muslims not to participate in violence. We denounce violence and respect freedom of opinion. But the other side has to understand that we love the Prophet Mohammed.” In Egypt it is a criminal offense to portray or even make a derogatory remark or inference about the prophet Mohammed.

The statement against the latest Charlie Hebdo Mohammed cartoon by the Egypt Islamic Authority called the Dar al-Ifta represents the mufti, which is the official Islamic law interpreter for the government. The statement condemning the latest publication by the Charlie Hebdo publication has caused many Muslims to be offended, but freedom of speech and the free exchange of ideals is treasured in Western society. Both sides will continue to clash because neither side will give an inch. Ordinary Muslims may be offended by the Mohammed cartoon but they do not imagine perpetrating violence over it, and the radical extremists will find any freedom offensive and fight against it using terrorism. Most of the world comes down on the side of Charlie Hebdo and the freedom to be satirical against anything viewed as unjust or revered.

Charlie Hebdo Strikes Back Against Radicals With Je Suis Charlie Cartoon

The staff at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper did not wait long to strike back at the radical extremists, just days after the massacre at the newspaper offices over Mohammed cartoons the publication has given an advance peek at the latest edition which will be published Wednesday. The latest cover will depict the prophet Mohammed holding a sign which says Je Suis Charlie, under text which says all is forgiven. This latest move is a show of defiance, to let the radical extremists know that they have not won and that the paper will continue to be defiant and push the limits regardless of what terrorists threaten. Editor Stephane Charbonnier, who was murdered during the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices, was defiant right to the end and the publication plans to continue this tradition.

It is fair to say that extremists around the world will be angered by the je suis Charlie cartoon that will be published in the next edition by Charlie Hebdo, and that may be the point. Terrorism works by terrorizing people to stop certain behaviors and speech, and giving in only gives the radicals what they want. By staying strong and continuing to be critical of everything the staff at the newspaper is showing that the Kouachi brothers and their ideology may have killed staffers but they can not break the spirit of those still left behind to carry on.

Masked Gunmen Commit Paris Terrorist Attack Wednesday Morning

In a Paris terrorist attack Wednesday masked gunmen killed 12 people after storming into a weekly newspaper which had used controversial prophet Mohammed caricatures in the past. One of those killed was the editor of the paper, and the masked gunmen escaped in a vehicle after committing the attack. Leaders from around the globe have condemned the Paris attack, with United States President Barack Obama calling it an act of cowardice. The attackers spoke flawless French without any noticeable accent, and they were yelling Allahu Akbar as they ran through the newspaper office shooting staff. The Charlie Hebdo newspaper had printed a number of controversial publications in the past that Muslims found offensive. In defense of the newspaper it had also included satire and poked fun at other religions as well as political figures and government officials.

Charlie Hebdo had been the target of threats in the past from extremists and radicals, but this did not stop the newspaper. Wednesday’s Paris terrorist attack by masked gunmen may have the opposite effect of what extremists intended though. With the entire world condemning the act of violence as barbaric and cowardly the terrorists did not achieve their desired intentions. Instead of creating fear they have united most of the globe into outrage, and this will only increase acts of defiance by other publications as well. All religions hold their deities sacred, but to murder in the name of any deity is wrong. This act of violence has only strengthened the resolve of the USA, Canada, and other countries to stand strong against extremists rather than giving in to terrorism.
