Canada is just the latest country to take precautions against Ebola, with Canadian entry visas for individuals from areas with high rates of Ebola have been suspended. Australia has also taken this step as well. This move by Canada is an attempt to keep Ebola out of Canada and to protect Canadians from the deadly virus. There have already been confirmed cases of Ebola in the USA to the south, so it is just a matter of time before the virus hits Canada unless the government takes steps to prevent this. O Friday the government confirmed that visa applications for nationals of countries that have a pattern of “widespread and persistent-intense transmission” when I comes to Ebola have been suspended, and this is also true for residents who are coming from these countries as well.

The suspension of Canadian entry visas for those who come from global regions where Ebola has caused high death tolls and where the virus is still spreading rapidly is viewed as a necessary precaution. The Ebola virus has caused fear and panic in many countries around the world, and medical professionals do not always agree on certain aspects of the virus or the treatment. Canada does have access to an experimental Ebola vaccine but it is better to stop the spread of the virus by containing it, and then treating those in the containment area. The cases in the USA show that people are not always honest, and even medical professionals may be at risk of spreading Ebola if they refuse to self quarantine for the required 21 days.

This evening the streets and neighborhoods will be filled with trick or treaters in a wide variety of costumes, and kids of all ages will be out going from door to door collecting candy and other goodies. A costume which is very visible in the evening is a good choice, It allows drivers and others to see the child so that there are no accidents or injuries instead of gorging on candy once the kids return home. In the dark it may be difficult to see your child crossing the street or going through an intersection, so take steps to boost their visibility. Glow sticks, flash lights, and other light sources not only make your child more visible to others but these items can also help prevent any trips and falls because your child can not see where they are walking.

Generous Syncrude Donation Promotes Trades in Alberta High Schools

A generous donation by Syncrude will be used to promote trades in Alberta high schools, with the goal of creating interest in the trades in high school students. The donation totaled $300,000, and it was provided to Skills Canada Alberta to support the organization initiative Skills in the Classroom. According to a statement from Syncrude Skills Canada Alberta was chosen for the donation because the organization changes the way students, teachers, and parents think about the trades as a career path. The generous donation will be used for the next 3 years to finance competitions and help to promote interest in the trades in Alberta high schools. According to the vice president of maintenance for Syncrude, Jim Richards, “We had supported Skills Canada on a year-by-year basis for the past two years and have been very impressed with their work. They have been hugely successful in engaging high school students. They hosted more than 28,000 students at their various events in 2014.”

Skills Canada has held many competitions for Alberta high school students in 45 different areas of the trades and technology, and these competitions help students connect with industry leaders and post secondary individuals who can be influential for trade students. According to the executive director of Skills Canada Alberta, Chris Browton, “Youth can benefit from careers in Alberta’s robust economy when they are provided with the right combination of inspiration, information, and opportunity. The partnership with Syncrude allows us to support students as they turn their interests into in-demand and valued careers.”

The Fort MacMurray Oil Barons will play the game on Halloween against the Grove Saints on home turf, and this will hopefully be the beginning of a winning streak and the end of their current slump. Right now the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons are in a 2-5-3 stretch, and they have had more tricks this month than they have had treats. Hopefully this next game on Halloween will help the team turn their luck around. When the Barons faced off against the Saints last time on October 3 of this year they suffered a 7-2 loss, starting the month off badly. In spite of the current record Hunt still stands behind the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, saying “If it was my call, we’d play them the next five in a rowI’d have Camrose come back up here too and we’d play them. All those top end teams to me, you want to play them as many times you can. They’re winning games because of the things they’re doing right and our guys need to get to that level.”

The signs of frustration are starting to show during the practice sessions fo rthe Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, and hopefully a win on Halloween will happen so that some of the stress the team is under is lifted. Brett McNeil and Taylor Lileikis went after each other and scrapped during a recent practice, although Likeikis down played the incident by stating “We were just going hard in the corners. It’s nothing serious — we’re good buddies. Just trying to get the energy level up for practice get the boys going ready for this weekend.”

Golfers in Fort MacMurray had few if any options if they wanted to hit a few holes during the winter months, but that has changed since the Miskanaw Golf Club has opened their new indoor golf simulator. Golfers can stay on top of their game regardless of what the weather is doing outside, and they can keep their golfing skills up even in the dead of winter. The golf course is not possible during the coldest months of the year in Fort MacMurray, but the indoor golf simulator will allow golfers to hone their skills and retain their flexibility during any season. This is just one more reason for Fort MacMurray residents to visit MacDonald Island Park, and a great way to spend an hour or two hitting the links when you can’t do this outside.

The Fitness Mechanics Indoor Golf Simulator will offer golfers a variety of graphics and course options to choose from. A press release quotes the CPGA director of Golf and Grounds for the Regional Recreation Corporation Rob MacGregor as stating “This season we are please to be offering new course options for the simulator, including Chateau Whistler and Royal Melbourne, as well as improved graphics for an even better simulator experience. These new options and the enhanced graphics will keep the experience fresh and exciting for the many golf enthusiasts who use the simulator to continue to enjoy the sport during the colder months.” Those who want to use the indoor golf simulator at the Miskanaw Golf Club can book a tee time with the Sly Fox Pro Shop.
