Broadcasting Rights for Fort MacMurray Oil Barons Changes Hands Again

Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, broadcasting rights

The broadcasting rights for the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons changed hands once more recently, allowing the rights to be aquired by Rogers. Some are referring to this as the most exciting trade that the team has seen in the last season. Rock 97.9, also known as CKYX, will be the new Oil Barons hockey home after the announcement was made on Monday afternoon. Previous negotiations with Rogers fell through and the broadcasting rights were obtained by Kace 91.1 last August. Before that change the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons broadcasting rights were held by Country 93.3 for several years. According to Rick Kirschner “It was a pleasure to support the Barons this past season and continue to increase our community outreach. KAOS 91.1 would like to thank the Fort McMurray Oil Barons board, management, team and supporters for a great year, and the opportunity to broadcast the 2014/15 season. We wish them the best as they go into the Western Canada Cup this April and in the future.”

One possible reason that the broadcasting rights for the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons may have changed hands is that the broadcasts from KAOS were often hard for listeners to hear, and there was problems with communication among the staff. The new play by play announcer for the Barons will be Karp, who commented “From my understanding, I found out about this at the same time as everyone else. I don’t know how long things had been going on for other than finding out not too long before the announcement — I really had no idea. We’re all here for one reason — entertain or to be entertained — and I like to have a lot of fun with it.”

Hockey Team Fort MacMurray Oil Barons Had Good Weekend

Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, hockey

This past weekend was a good one for hockey, and for the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons as well although the team did have some setbacks as well. Friday the local hockey team won against the Lloydminster Bobcats 3-0, but on Saturday they lost to the same team they beat a day earlier with a final score of 4-2. According to Curtis Hunt, the head coach for the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, “I think we’ve got enough talent, but hard work beats talent every day of the week so until our guys get prepared to play the kind of game we need to play — predictable within our group, short support, good communication, pucks in like we did last night — it won’t look good for us.”

The victory Friday did not last long for hockey’s Fort MacMurray Oil Barons. Saturday MOB lost to the very same Bobcats, showing that neither team is truly ready for the playoffs just yet. Gary VanHereweghe, head coach for the Bobcats, said “After the game we had here last night, we weren’t even close in relation to competing and where you have to be to play in the playoffs. We knew coming in if we were going to get second place, we were going to have to win it, we were going to have to earn it. That’s the only way you want to get it.” The Oil Barons will have to work harder if they want to reach the top this season, and they had a good weekend but it was not great because of their loss to the Bobcats on Saturday.

Things Looking Up for the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons

Things have been looking up for the Fort MacMurry Oil Barons hockey team, and hopefully this trend will continue. At the beginning of November the team lost back to back games when they went up against the Spruce Grove Saints, and in the 13 games that followed the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons managed a 10-3 record that shows the hockey team is focusing more and playing better than ever. According to Ryan Allen, the assistant coach for the Oil Barons “Everybody’s getting used to changes and the new systems and new coach obviously. More buy-in from everybody including our veterans and that trickles down to our rookies. After Okotoks, I think everyone was mad at that game. We didn’t play that well and everyone’s attitude changed and came out against Brooks.”

Hockey has gotten more exciting since the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons have Stefan Burzan back after an injury that was not disclosed. When asked about his return Burzan commented “It’s good to be back. It was tough watching. It’s been a long road so I’m just happy to be back. Defensive style, winning draws, that’s something that every team needs, regardless of a winning streak or not.” There is also talk about Luc Lalor returning to the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, and Cole Davis and Kioe Gable were called up for Wednesday’s hockey game against the Saints. All in all it looks like the Oil Barons are on a roll, and nothing could make hockey fans in the Wood Buffalo area happier.

Fort MacMurray Oil Barons Will Host the Spruce Grove Saints on Halloween

The Fort MacMurray Oil Barons will play the game on Halloween against the Grove Saints on home turf, and this will hopefully be the beginning of a winning streak and the end of their current slump. Right now the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons are in a 2-5-3 stretch, and they have had more tricks this month than they have had treats. Hopefully this next game on Halloween will help the team turn their luck around. When the Barons faced off against the Saints last time on October 3 of this year they suffered a 7-2 loss, starting the month off badly. In spite of the current record Hunt still stands behind the Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, saying “If it was my call, we’d play them the next five in a rowI’d have Camrose come back up here too and we’d play them. All those top end teams to me, you want to play them as many times you can. They’re winning games because of the things they’re doing right and our guys need to get to that level.”

The signs of frustration are starting to show during the practice sessions fo rthe Fort MacMurray Oil Barons, and hopefully a win on Halloween will happen so that some of the stress the team is under is lifted. Brett McNeil and Taylor Lileikis went after each other and scrapped during a recent practice, although Likeikis down played the incident by stating “We were just going hard in the corners. It’s nothing serious — we’re good buddies. Just trying to get the energy level up for practice get the boys going ready for this weekend.”
