Selena Gomez Just Got Super Candid About Her Past Boyfriends

Selena Gomez has been on a roll since releasing two back-to-back singles—“Lose You to Love Me” and “Look At Her Now,” her first bouts of new music in a while. On Thursday morning, October 24, she sat down with Ryan Seacrest and talked about the experiences behind the songs, seemingly verifying that they were at least partially inspired by her breakup with Justin Bieber. Despite the tough moments, she said she’s in a much better place now.

In one question, Seacrest referenced the lyrics from “Lose You to Love Me” when Gomez sings, “In two months you replaced us like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it in the thick of healing.” Many believe she’s talking about Bieber here, who moved on with Hailey Baldwin not long after he and Gomez split up for the last time. Without naming Bieber, Gomez opened up about how she’s used to seeing exes move on from her quickly.

“Yeah, I think, you know, I’m really grateful too because I’ve actually experienced that a million times before,” she said. “And that’s the unfortunate part about what I do. So it’s all very real to me, and I’m sure it’s just entertainment for other people, but I think I had become numb to it, and it would be stupid of me if I didn’t acknowledge what I had felt because it would be inauthentic, and that’s everything I claim to be and do.”

She continued, “I know there are thousands of people, men and women, who have felt this feeling, and it’s extremely real. And on top of the social media and everything, it doesn’t matter if you’re in my position or if you’re in someone [else’s], because you’re always going to somehow find this negative space. That’s why I have to be careful, and I just have to take steps back and just focus on what I’m doing and no one else.”

It’s possible Gomez is talking solely about Bieber here, but she could also be referencing her 2017 relationship with The Weeknd, or perhaps someone we don’t know. Regardless, this is the most candid she’s been about her relationships in a long time.

Gomez also revealed that the two new tracks are just glimpses into the new album she’s been working on for four years. “It took me a long time to get through it,” she said. “Now it’s fine, I’m smiling. It’s so great.”

She added, “These two songs were me wrapping up a chapter in a pretty little bow, and the rest of the album is just all about where I am now and where I’m going so, in my opinion, these are great songs, but I’ve saved the best for later.”

We’re excited to see what music Selena Gomez releases next.
