Meghan Markle's Messy Bun Makes Another Return
During yet another official royal appearance this week, Meghan Markle subtly confirmed what will likely become her go-to beauty look while hanging with the Windsors going forward: A casual, messy bun, similar to the one she wore last week.
What’s notable about it is essentially how un-notable it is. Not too stuffy, not too sloppy, it’s the style so many of us throw our hair into to look quickly tied together—parted in the middle, a few flyaway pieces in front, and an imperfect bun in the back. Still, Markle makes it looks fabulous, especially coupled with her chic monochromatic coats and well-tailored dresses to round out the ensemble.
The concept of a “royal messy bun” might seem silly to think about in terms of its contempt for royal hair protocol, but think about it—when was the last time you’ve seen the traditional-leaning Kate Middleton wear anything other than her typical blowout? She’s worn chignons, sure, but they’re nearly always neatly tucked with a hairnet.

It’s so unusual, in fact, that Markle’s messy bun preferences are even considered a breach in appearance. (No joke.) The royals aren’t exactly known for adapting well to aesthetic change, as evidenced by rules so banal as forbidding red nail polish and never crossing their legs while in public. But, hey, this might signal a shift for the royal family—or at the very least validate the next time you stretch your hair one more wash. What? It’s royal.
