The Trailer for Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding's Last Christmas Is So Charming
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And by that we mean, studios are releasing trailers for all the movies that will be coming out later this fall and holiday season.
Yesterday, it was Little Women, and today brings us the extremely charming first trailer for Last Christmas, the rom-com starring Game of Thrones‘ Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, he of Crazy Rich Asians fame. Oh, and the movie was written by (and co-stars) the great Emma Thompson and is directed by Paul Feig, who did Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, and A Simple Favor, which also featured Golding.
In the trailer, we meet Clarke’s Kate, who works in a year-round Christmas-themed store as an elf, where her boss, played by Michelle Yeoh, has nicknamed her “Lazy the Elf.” She bumps into Tom (Golding) outside of the store one day—right before a bird literally poops in her eye—and they strike up an adorable conversation. Of course, this being a rom-com, the two keep randomly meeting and growing closer.
Later in the trailer, Tom takes Kate to a homeless shelter where he volunteers, and she opens up to him about a near-death experience that’s eerily similar to Clarke’s own real-life situation. (Earlier this year, the actor opened up about suffering through brain aneurysms that almost killed her.) “”I was really sick and I nearly died. I don’t tell people because they get weird, but I don’t think you’ll get weird,” her character says. “I’m just scared all the time.” But there appears to be something mysterious (or perhaps magical) about Tom, who disappears for periods of time, according to Kate.
We also meet her family, including an overbearing mother, played by Thompson, and a nagging sister. The movie features the music of the late George Michael, including the song the film is named for, which is basically a cherry on top of this whole situation.
