Cardi B Is Back With a New Song Because ‘I Got a Baby, I Need Some Money’
It looks like Cardi B caught a whiff of the Internet frenzy that ensued after she announced her new single “Money,” on Monday. Instead of making fans wait anxiously until Thursday, as she originally teased, the Bronx phenom decided to gift the world with the track two days ahead of schedule.
And if you were worried that the song might have a tough time living up to the opulent, ice-heavy artwork that she debuted on Instagram, we’re happy to report that “Money” is an absolute banger (insert sign of relief here). This is the first new solo material Cardi has released since her juggernaut debut album Invasion of Privacy in April, and a lot has changed for the rapper since then — a lot of which she addresses in the song.
First, she’s rich. Very, very rich (the song isn’t called “No Money,” after all). “I was born to flex / Diamonds on my neck / I like boardin’ jets / I like mornin’ sex / But nothing in this world that I like more than checks,” she raps over a bass-heavy, stripped-down beat courtesy of CB2.
She also addresses her new role as the mother of Kulture, the baby girl she had with Migos rapper Offset in July. “I got a baby, I need some money, yeah / I need cheese for my egg / All y’all bitches in trouble / Bring brass knuckles to the scuffle.”
Most notably, the song marks Cardi B’s return to the hardcore New York boom-bap sound that defined her breakout single, “Bodak Yellow,” after she took a brief pop hiatus with her smash hit “I Like It.” So, is it possible to release the song of the summer well into October? We’re about to find out. Global warming, y’all.
