Meghan Markle Is Reportedly Doing Her First Solo Engagement With the Queen This Month
Meghan Markle is reportedly about to get some major one-on-one time with her new grandmother-in-law. According to People, the newest royal will accompany Queen Elizabeth II on a “road trip” June 14. They’ll travel to Chester, England, 165 miles northwest of London, to unveil a new bridge, open the Storyhouse Theater, and visit Chester Town Hall for lunch. While the Duchess of Sussex traveled on a number of official visits with Prince Harry—and one with Queen Elizabeth—leading up to their May 19 nuptials, this is supposedly the first time she’ll be going solo with the queen.
Markle met the queen for the first time back in September, shortly after she went on a three-week trip to Africa with Prince Harry. The pair announced their engagement two months later, and the royal matriarch bestowed her formal consent upon their marriage in May.
Following the wedding, Markle was reported to be starting six months of “royal lessons” in order to make her transition into the family as smooth as possible. In those lessons, she’ll apparently learn all the rules of the royal road, and get ready for many, many more outings — with the queen and all the other royals — in the future.
As People reports, the former Suits star has been excited to “hit the ground running” now that she’s officially a part of the royal family, and her outing with the queen is a clear step in that direction. “She’s not going to want to be a quiet princess and simply open hospitals or cut ribbons,” a source previously told the magazine. The Duchess of Sussex reportedly wants to focus on issues surrounding young women and teenage girls, but is also “familiarizing herself with the landscape in this country,” as evidenced by her upcoming trip to Chester. “She’s meeting groups and wants to do that privately, so she can get to know people,” the source added.
