Fenty Beauty's New Mattemoiselle Lipsticks: Everything We Know So Far
Even with the insanely pretty new lipsticks coming out, our lipstick routine hasn’t changed for the past, oh, 10 years. A swipe over your top lip, a swipe over your bottom, and maybe a tissue blot if you’re trying to make it last. Done. Such has been the way of the lipstick world, but because Rihanna is Rihanna and Fenty is Fenty, that’s no longer. It’s too soon to know whether the brand’s new Mattemoiselle lipsticks are going to change everything like its foundations did, but we already know they come with an unheard-of trick.
When you think lipstick,”innovation” probably isn’t the first word that comes to mind. Walk down any beauty aisle, and bullets and doe foot wands are pretty much your only options. And when news about Fenty’s new Mattemoiselles hit our inbox, at first, it looked like more of the same. Granted, the $18 lipsticks come in a range of shades that’s everything you would expect of Rihanna. She gave us nude colors for every skin tone, reds that meet the bar Stunna Lip Paint set, and a few purples, blues, and greens, because Fenty products come with confidence built in. The formula looks good too, promising serious pigment without the feel of it on your lips. Just going off all that, we were psyched for December 26, when the Mattemoiselles will be dropping.
But packaging-wise, they’re pure twins to the Starlit Hyper-Glitz Lipstick that came out in Fenty’s holiday collection. Very pretty, but a basic bullet lipstick—or so we thought. Because according to the Global Fenty Beauty Artistry Team (specifically, global makeup artists Priscilla Ono and Hector Espinal), they designed Fenty’s lipsticks with a hidden tip in mind. Now, people toss around the words “hidden tip” on the Internet these days, but trust—you haven’t heard this before.
Picture how you normally apply lipstick, with your hand coming at your face from below, around your chin. We’ve all gone through the motions—it feels intuitive. Now, say goodbye to that. Fenty’s team says that angle is perfect for applying lipstick to your top lip. But for your bottom lip? Flip the lipstick upside down, and swipe it across your lip from that angle (holding the tube pointed down, coming from around your nose).
It feels entirely weird at first, after trying it, it really does gives you a more controlled application—no longer is getting to the corners of your lips an annoying feat of precision. Held upside down, Fenty’s bullets get in there with a perfect fit. Our out of office message is on; we’re trying this with every lipstick we own.
