Angelina Jolie Opens Up About Adjusting to the Single Life

Almost one year after her split from husband Brad Pitt—and amid tabloid rumors of reconciliationAngelina Jolie has opened up about her singledom in a new interview with the Sunday Telegraph. The actress and director of First They Killed My Father spoke to the British newspaper after a long day of promoting her new movie, admitting that press interviews aren’t as easy as they used to be.

“I am a little shy this time because I am not as strong inside as I have been in the past,” she told the Telegraph.

The actress, 42, filed for divorce in 2016 after a two-year marriage and 12-year relationship with Pitt—which makes for a lot of history to share with someone. So it’s not surprising that she admitted that being alone has hit her hard.

“It’s not something I wanted. There’s nothing nice about it. It’s just hard. Sometimes maybe it appears I am pulling it all together, but really I am just trying to get through my days,” said Jolie, who shares six children with Pitt, three of whom are adopted. “ Emotionally it’s been a very difficult year, and I have had some other health issues. So my health is something I have to monitor.”

Jolie is moving forward by looking at her difficult year as an opportunity to change—which means reconnecting with her fun self again.

“I think now I need to rediscover a little bit of the old me,” she said. “I think we lose our way a bit. I have had a lot happen in my life, from certain people passing to health issues to raising the children.”

She continued: “And it’s been a very good time to absorb and develop and grow. But maybe now that my kids are growing up, I am starting to realize that my own sense of play has been put on hold for a while. And maybe them hitting their teens is going to bring out a little more fun in Mom. So maybe I am going back. It may be time.”

It’s refreshing to hear Jolie speak so freely and openly about her emotions and her feelings surrounding her divorce. Seeing her divorce as a chance to grow and change is a perspective that not many people take and it’s immensely inspiring.
