Fatal Collision on Highway 881 Causes Single Death

Highway 881, fatal collision

A fatal collision on Highway 881 Thursday morning has resulted in a single death. Around 1:30 am on Thursday morning a call to the RCMP reported that there was a collision on Highway 881, where a pickup truck had collided with a truck hauling a wide load which was hauling equipment designated for the oilsands. The driver of the pickup truck, a man in his 60s from LaLoche, Saskatchewan, was pronounced dead on the scene. The pickup was traveling north with the driver and a passenger when they struck the semi which was headed south. The driver of the pickup did not cross the lane, but he failed to move over enough to allow the wide load room to get by safely.

When questioned about the fatal collision on Highway 881 RCMP Cst. Ashley Quallie stated “We were notified by one of the pilot vehicles that was escorting the wide load. The pickup was still in its lane, however it did not move over enough, so it struck the wide load.” The passenger in the pickup truck was taken to Northern Lights Regional Health Centre where they were listed as being in stable condition. Highway 881 was closed from the time of the fatal collision until around 11 a.m. According to the RCMP, and the cause of the accident is still being investigated. The RCMP has stated that the wide load appeared to be operating correctly and in compliance with the safety and traffic laws so far but the final determination on cause has not yet been released. A fatal collision in Calgary leads to a guilty plea by the driver. On August 18, 2012 at around 3:30 am Ramandeep Singh Jaswal blew through a stop sign, hitting a woman and sending her a distance from the accident while killing her in the process. Minutes after hitting the woman Jaswal inquired if his car was going to be okay, without showing the same consideration for his victim. The guilty plea means that the reckless driver will probably spend some time in the penitentiary and the plea covered four charges. Ramandeep Singh Jaswal entered a guilty plea for dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and refusing to provide breath samples where bodily harm and death occurred.

After the guilty plea for the fatal collision Jonathan Hak, the Crown prosecutor, read from the facts that were agreed on. These facts included that Jaswal was driving at least two times the posted speed limit in the area where the fatal collision occurred, and that he ran the red light at Sarcee Trail S.W. And Bow Trail. Hak told the court that Jaswal struck a Ford pickup carrying Sean Mahoney and Kelli-Jo Smith, Mahoney’s wife. “Smith struck the side of a barrier and came to rest approximately 11 metres from the Ford. Smith suffered major head injuries and died at the scene. The Mercedes was calculated to be travelling between 123 km/h and 145 km/h at the time of impact.” Sean Mahoney was also severely injured in the fatal collision, suffering from broken vertebra, broken teeth, soft tissue damage over his body, a head injury, and dislocated neck discs.
