9 TV Shows and Movies to Watch the Week of December 30, 2018

It’s officially 2019, which is exciting, but the bad news is there’s a bit of a lull in new TV shows and movies. No worries, though: There are still some fun things happening in entertainment this week to ease you into the new year. For one: The Masked Singer, a new music competition show that’s just as wild as it sounds. Also, a horror movie about escape rooms! I’m already shaking.

Below, all the things to bookmark for this week:

The Orville: Seth MacFarlane’s whacky space comedy is back for a second season because…of course it is! Fans of Family Guy should tune in to this two-hour premiere. 8 P.M. ET on Fox

Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest: Watching this is honestly better than going out on New Year’s Eve. (For the record: Going out on NYE is overrated—and so is having a midnight kiss.) 10 P.M. ET on ABC

Taylor Swift Reputation Stadium Tour: No worries if you missed Swift’s electric Reputation concert tour on the road. Netflix filmed a special, and it’s honestly better than sitting in the nose bleeds.Streaming on Netflix

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The last four books of Lemony Snicket’s hit series—The Slippery Slope, The Grim Grotto, The Penultimate Peril, and The End—will come to life in the third and final season of this Netflix show. Streaming on Netflix

grown-ish: Season two of this spinoff, starring Yara Shahidi and Francia Raisa, kicks off tonight. Here’s to another chapter of Zoey Johnson’s college shenanigans. TBD time on Freeform

The Masked Singer: This new singing show has its contestants, who are famous singers, wear costumes to disguise their identities. So, basically it’s The Voice meets every Pixar movie in existence. 9 P.M. ET on Fox

[embedded content]

Gotham: Season five of Fox’s popular series, which pulls from Batman and the DC Comics universe, begins this evening. It’s Ben McKenzie’s second best role ever! (His first, obviously, is The OC.) 8 P.M. ET on Fox

[embedded content]

Escape Room: Strangers have to complete an escape room that’s actually terrifying and lethal. It’s the kitschy version of Saw you didn’t know you needed. (Well, actually, do we need this? Catch me on opening night.) In theaters

[embedded content]

Annihilation: Natalie Portman and Gina Rodriguez star in this gripping thriller about a group of female scientists who investigate a parallel universe called The Shimmer. It’s like Stranger Things but with an Oscar winner. Streaming on Hulu

The Best Movies on Netflix December 2018

We’ve all been there: It’s Friday night and you’ve agreed to host a movie night, but no one can figure out what to watch. One tactic I tried when this happened to me was having all my guests write choices on slips of paper and we randomly drew from a bowl. The problem with that, though, is your friends with no taste might throw in some horrible selections—like Boogeyman II, which is what we ended up watching that night. (I learned you don’t need to see Boogeyman I to figure out the plot. It’s pretty straightforward and…awful.)

The point is, don’t let this happen to you! There are plenty of fantastic movies out there to watch at your next gathering—and most of them are streaming on Netflix. Here are the best ones to ensure your movie night will be a success.

The Best TV Shows on Netflix in December 2018

Netflix is officially a destination for television, which is fantastic, but that makes finding something to watch 10 times more difficult. There’s just too much good content to choose from, and it ranges in style, genre, and taste. For comedy lovers, there’s The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Netflix originals like Grace and Frankie. Shondaland shows are also on Netflix, so it’s easy to just get sucked into those. When it’s Wednesday night and all you want to do is unwind, deciding on a show can be stressful in itself.

That’s where we come in. We’ll be periodically updating this post every week with the absolute best shows streaming on Netflix right now. For now, though, give the below fan favorites a whirl. They never disappoint.
