Mike Whittaker of Trucorp Investments dedicates award to the memory of Moncton’s fallen RCMP officers.
WireService.ca Press Release (10/03/2014) Moncton – The Earnest and Young Atlantic Entrepreneur of the Year Awards were held at the Marriot Hotel in Halifax on Friday Oct 3rd. There were four categories in the annual event. Mike Whittaker of Truro Nova Scotia based Trucorp Investments won the award for the important Business to Consumer category.
Trucorp companies include Bonte Foods/ Chris Brothers; the Dieppe based food processor whose growing meat division has recently seen a large increase in the number of Chris Brothers products on store shelves across Atlantic Canada. Bonte also produces the line of all natural , no preservative deli meat line under the brand of Natures Deli.
Trucorp also owns Grinners Food Systems Limited, better known for their iconic Greco Pizza and Capt. Submarine brands. They also recently launched a new frozen yogurt division under the brand name FROZU.
“I’m totally honored by the award,” says Whittaker. “It’s a great testament to the entire company and the amazing talented people we have working in it.” Whittaker was hired by the company in 1981 when Bill Hay purchased the fledgling operation. Mike became a partner in the company in the mid 1990s. He and Bill hay are the sole partners today. There were nine Greco restaurants in 1981. The company now has 150 brands operating all across Atlantic Canada and is one the largest franchising systems in the region.

With the closing the Maple Leaf facility in Moncton Bonte Chris Brothers becomes the largest non-poultry deli meat producer in Atlantic Canada. Trucorp Investments is listed as # 33 in Atlantic Progress Magazines 2013 Top 101 companies in Atlantic Canada.
In his acceptance speech Whittaker dedicated the award to the fallen RCMP officers in Moncton in June of this year. Whittaker lives a few blocks away from where the tragedy occurred.
