Bank of Canada invites Canadians to comment on bank note design principles

Available as: PDF

The Bank of Canada today announced that it is inviting Canadians to comment on the principles that guide the design of the country’s bank notes.

The consultation, which will take place until 10 November, is a way for Canadians to contribute in an unprecedented way to the design of future bank note series. Canadians can participate in an online survey by visiting our Principles for Bank Note Design web page. The Bank will publish a summary of the comments received before the end of the year.

The consultation stems from a review the Bank conducted for the process used to select, develop and design the visual content for the Polymer series of bank notes. The review concluded that Canadians should have increased participation in the design process for the next series.

The Bank wants to include Canadians’ input at every stage of the design process. This consultation seeks to solidify the foundation upon which the visual content – theme, subject matter and images – will be developed in the future.

The Bank will also benefit from Canadians’ ideas on how images can respect these principles.

When the Bank begins work on the next series, it will again seek input from Canadians.

Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Says Businesses Are Concerned About Ontario Pension Plan

The Cornwall Chamber of Commerce is concerned that Ontario’s proposed pension plan will negatively impact economic competitiveness and job creation in Cornwall.

WireService.ca Media Release (10/08/2014) Cornwall, ON – The Chamber is joining a coalition of over 50 chambers of commerce and boards of trade from across the province in voicing its concern to the Government of Ontario.

The Government of Ontario is planning to move ahead with its plans to implement a new pension scheme for the province. The Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP), which aims to supplement the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), will require employers to match employee pension contributions, increasing their cost of doing business. For example, in the case of a business that employs 10 people with an average salary of $45,000, the employer will be obligated to pay almost $8,000 per year in additional pension contributions.

According to a recent Ontario Chamber of Commerce survey, 72 percent of businesses in the province believe that pension reform should be a priority for government. However, the same businesses have also been clear about their concern for Ontario’s broader economic picture, in which the economy is projected to grow slowly for the foreseeable future.

Local businesses, for their part, worry about the cumulative impact that government regulatory and legislative changes will have on their competitiveness.

“Our members are worried about the costs that a new mandatory pension plan would impose on them,” says Chamber President, Kevin Hargreaves “Combined with increases in electricity costs, high WSIB rates, and in some employers’ cases a higher minimum wage, the new pension plan will burden businesses that are already struggling to meet the costs of doing business in Ontario.”

“Businesses in our area are wary of any increase in payroll taxes.”

The proposed pension plan comes at a challenging time for the region. According to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Business Confidence Index, businesses in the region are among the least confident in the provincial economy and their own organization’s economic outlook.

In its letter to the provincial government, the Chamber calls on the Government of Ontario to provide employers with answers to a number of crucial, but unanswered questions.

“What will be the impact of a fully-implemented ORPP? What happens when a business can’t afford to meet the requirements of the ORPP? What about the self-employed?” asks Hargreaves. “Businesses in Cornwall are seeking answers to these questions.”

“The retirement income challenge is a real one,” says Allan O’Dette, President & CEO of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce. “But we need to ensure that any changes to the pension system are made with a full understanding of their impact on Ontario’s business climate.”

RROC and the CME target supply chain collaboration under the Saskatchewan Manufacturing Centre of Excellence

The Regina Regional Opportunities Commission and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters signed an agreement to collaborate in the area of industry development within Regina and surrounding region.

WireService.ca Media Release (10/06/2014) Regina, SK – Regina Regional Opportunities Commission (RROC) and the Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) signed an agreement to collaborate in the area of industry development within Regina and surrounding region. They agree manufacturing is vital to the continued prosperity of the Province of Saskatchewan and the Regina region, and this agreement will ensure continued growth in this important sector.

“Manufacturing is strategically important to the Regina and area economy, and to the fabric of Saskatchewan,” explains Derek Lothian, CME Vice President & Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Manufacturing Council. “This partnership will help us identify supply chain opportunities, and arm companies with the insight and resources they need to capitalize on the unprecedented growth throughout the province.”

Over the next the next two decades, it is estimated that more than $50 billion will be invested in capital projects for Saskatchewan’s mining industry.

“In 2013, the manufacturing sector in Saskatchewan accounted for a record $15.7 billion in sales and generated an estimated $49.5 billion in total economic activity,” said John Lee, President and CEO of RROC. “Having our organizations aligned in establishing key objectives, specific strategies and actions will contribute to enhanced opportunities in a growing industry.”

RROC is the agency responsible for advancing economic development and tourism in the Regina region. Recently RROC opted to pursue an industry development strategy in the areas where there is identifiable strategic and competitive strength. Two of the industries RROC seeks to grow and expand in the Regina region reside within the manufacturing sector.

CME is Canada’s largest and longest standing trade and industry association. CME helps Canadian manufacturers and exporters compete, and win, in domestic and global markets by leveraging its leadership, expertise, connections, and the strength of its extensive national membership.

The collaboration of these two organizations will benefit the Regina region as they work toward identifying opportunities over the next three to five years and developing the strategies to pursue them.

This announcement was made at the Saskatchewan Manufacturing Council’s fall meetings held in Regina on October 6th.
