Lashana Lynch Is Reportedly the New 007
Over the weekend, news spread like wildfire that British actress Lashana Lynch will be taking on the role as Agent 007 in the next Bond film. While it seems like rumor is indeed true (more on that below), the headlines should also be taken with a tiny grain of salt: That’s because Lynch, most known for her recent work as Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel, might be playing Agent 007—but she won’t be taking on the actual role of James Bond in the film.
According to a source who spoke to The Mail on Sunday, Lynch’s character will be tasked with bringing James Bond out of retirement. But while Bond has been away, Lynch’s character reportedly took over his famous call signal, 007.
“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M [played by Ralph Fiennes] says, ‘Come in, 007,’ and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful, and a woman,” the insider told The Mail on Sunday. “It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond, but he’s been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman.”
The source added, Bond will “of course” attempt to seduce the new female 007, only to have her “roll her eyes” at him instead.
So yes, she will be 007, but no, she won’t be Bond. But that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate this as a step forward for a franchise well-known for using women mostly as sexual props in the plot lines—and it seems like fans are excited about it too.
The 007 swap, The Mail on Sunday reported, can largely be credited to the hiring of writer and actor Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
