How a Larger-Than-Life Sunhat Became Summer's Must-Have Accessory
When celebrities and influencers start wearing A Thing en masse—be it teeny-tiny sunglasses or an exercise dress—we’ll eventually feel compelled to buy it. It doesn’t matter how unusual (or downright extra) it may appear at first: the Instagram endorsement is powerful. And for summer 2018, there’s already a frontrunner for It Item of the Season, as seen on everyone from Tracee Ellis Ross and Emily Ratajkowski to any influencer vacationing in Italy or Greece right now. And it’s pretty unmissable.
There’s a particular kind of oversized straw hat—so massive, it’s nearly unwearable—that’s trending. Designer Simon Porte Jacquemus and his “La Bomba” Spring 2018 collection is partly responsible, with its gigantic shoulder-grazing headgear that defied gravity (and practicality) and evoked the luxurious feel of a beachside vacation. Pretty much as soon as it hit retail, that hat—and others like it—started showing up everywhere off the runway: On vacations, in backyards, at a very luxurious wedding… Mexican label Olmos & Flores has an equally enormous, frayed-trim style that Bella Hadid donned for a recent beachside shoot.
Even if requires two hands to hold upright, this kind of oversized hat is not only guaranteed to provide shade (thanks to its umbrella-like shape), it’s also a look-at-me, literally-can’t-miss-it status symbol. The craze-starting Jacquemus hat is largely sold out across the Internet—a testament to its double-tap attracting power—but there are plenty of extra-large sun hats at a far more accessible price that will scratch that itch. So if you’re looking to turn your vacation into a lifestyle, check out the headwear in the gallery ahead.
