Game of Thrones Prequel: Everything We Know So Far

If you’re upset about Game of Thrones ending next year, we have some great news for you: HBO has officially green-lit a prequel to the acclaimed series. That’s right, my friends: We’re not finished with the world of Westeros just yet.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jane Goldman, who’s penned action classics like Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, and Kick-Ass wrote the pilot episode for the prequel, from a story by both her and George R.R. Martin (who’s responsible for GoT‘s source material). Here’s everything else we know about the series so far. (We’ll update this post with more information as it comes in.)

1. The plot takes place thousands of years before Game of Thrones. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will chronicle the world’s descent from the “golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” “Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know,” an official release from HBO reads.

2. The teleplay is credited to Goldman. She’ll also serve as the showrunner, which is awesome. Game of Thrones producer Vince Gerardi, as well as Damages and Bloodline co-creator Daniel Zelman, will also be involved with the series.

3. This will be the first of hopefully several GoT spin-offs. In May 2017, HBO revealed several writers were working with Martin on “successor shows.”

4. This prequel (and any other spinoffs) will most likely air a year or more after the final season. HBO’sprogramming president Casey Bloys said he’s open to doing anywhere between zero and five spinoffs. “Though probably more likely one. But we’ll see,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

We can’t wait!
