Lena Dunham Has an Important Update About Her Health

Girls creator Lena Dunham has never been one for shying away from being open and honest about the health issues that affect and challenge her: she’s made a powerful video about struggling with OCD, talked frankly about her rosacea, and been transparent on social media about the many doctors visits and five—five!—surgeries aimed at alleviating her debilitating pain from endometriosis.

On Friday, she had an update about her health, which she shared with Us Weekly. “I’ve always, as you’ve seen from Girls, used my creativity and platform to talk about what was happening in my life to make it less lonely, and so I’m really grateful because I found a community and ultimately found my way towards health by being open about what I was going through,” she told the magazine.

And she has some thoughts about the haters who troll her comments:

“You don’t have to feel bad for me because I have the most amazing life,” she added in her conversation with Us. “I get to make art all day long. I get to express myself to an audience that cares, so if there’s going to be a segment of people who don’t sort of connect with my belief system, then I’m just going to have accept that because I’ve made myself a public figure.”

Dunham’s candidness is refreshing, because her battles speak to a huge range of women whose lives are also affected by chronic illness and struggles with mental health. And those health issues don’t stop for those on the red carpet: in May, Dunham had posted an Instagram about leaving the Met Ball due to complications from her most recent surgery. “I’ll always be proud of those Met Gala pics—not just because I felt beautiful, surrounded by art and magic, hugging my best friend tightly, but because they’re evidence that women contain steely multitudes,” she wrote in an accompanying caption that also honored other women who suffer from chronic illness.
