'Game of Thrones' Is Planning to Shoot Multiple Endings for Season 8
With the lethal combo of people leaking plot points on social media and hackers threatening to reveal secrets before episodes even air, avoiding Game of Thrones spoilers is a battle similar to, well, one you’d see on Game of Thrones.
That’s why the show isn’t taking any chances when it comes to season 8. The HBO series is going to extreme lengths during filming to throw off fans (and those pesky hackers) by filming multiple scenes and endings.
“They’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really knows what happens,” HBO’s programming chief Casey Bloys explained during an appearance at Moravian College in Pennsylvania, according to The Morning Call. “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
Filming multiple endings to a show, while complicated, isn’t as crazy as it sounds. Yes, it’s a lot of extra work and money to shoot scenes that aren’t necessary, but it’s an old trick other shows have done before. Dallas did this so fans wouldn’t find out who had killed J.R., and Thrones even used this tactic last season. Vulture points out that Kit Harington has mentioned “the show shot multiple fake scenes for season seven to throw paparazzi off the trail.”
So, in other words, when people start leaking major plot points in season 8, take everything with a grain of salt. (But have no doubt that anything is possible in the twisty world of Game of Thrones.)
