Teyana Taylor Absolutely Dominated the Runway at New York Fashion Week

It’s been a little over a year since the premiere of Kanye West’s music video for “Fade,” but its star, Teyana Taylor, isn’t done reminding the world that she has some serious moves. In fact, she’s expanding her definition of the stage to encompass the traditional runway—and New York Fashion Week will never be the same.

The performer is no NYFW newbie, but she’s usually perched on the front row, looking fly as hell. For Spring 2018, though, Taylor is becoming a more active participant in the spectacle by actually taking to the catwalk herself. First up, she surprised—and delighted—the audience gathered for Italian streetwear brand GCDS on Friday by strutting (and we do mean strutting) down the pastel pink carpet in the final look.

“When I watched the video I was like, ‘Damn, I’m so extra,” Taylor told USA Today after the show. “But then I realized I’m not extra, I’m spicy, that’s all. I’m just spicy, I put a little spice in everybody’s life.”

She’s embracing the fact that her GCDS walk has become a meme (and
even partook in it)—though she’s mostly surprised people were so hyped up about it in the first place. “It’s so crazy, because I was like, ‘I’m short,’ and when I walked out I wasn’t even expecting people to clap,” Taylor explained. “And when everyone went crazy I snatched my glasses off and flipped my hair, and then that became a meme,” she continued. “So I’ve been, like, memed up for the past two days. But it was kinda dope to see that black girl magic, and to put my own ‘umph’ on it.”

What she didn’t spill to the publication is that the GCDS show was but a teaser for what was to come: on Saturday night, Taylor was the final act at Phillip Plein’s Spring 2018 show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

Her appearance wasn’t limited to simply a lap around the runway: Taylor performed some jaw-dropping choreography to the tune of Future (as in, a live performance from Future) that went above, beyond, and even a little farther than the typical finale fare.

And people were feeling it.
