This Kate Middleton Hair Conspiracy Actually Checks Out
In literally any single context, a photo of Kate Middleton is a gift. Her personal style is consistently classic and any slight change in her fashion or beauty choices is a delight to behold. And while the duchess is probably used to the constant level of speculation that comes with life in the public eye, it turns out she might just have a very public tell when she’s got big, personal news coming up. By which I mean, Middleton’s been secretly communicating with us this whole time, and we didn’t even know it. Personally, I’m honored.
First noticed by English political reporter Kate Proctor, there’s a highly interesting correlation between Middleton’s hair changes and her pregnancy announcements. Per Proctor’s tweet, Middleton’s basically been running a decoy operation: Every time she changes her hairstyle, people focus on it—and then, with the world paying more attention to her hair than her silhouette, the family announces the pregnancy at the time of their choosing.
The crazy thing is, the pattern’s in plain sight. Follow along…
On June 29 (about two months prior to the reveal), Middleton was making an official visit to London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. Her hair looked great, if standard, with its long length and curled ends.

Then a few weeks later, on July 3, Middleton showed up to the Wimbledon Tennis Championships with hair freshly cut into midlength territory. Clearly, it looks gorgeous, with the ideal amount of lift at her roots and the just-slightly blunt ends. Very casual, but also incredibly chic (and on trend with the cuts every celebrity in Hollywood is getting right now). About a month later, we got the news: Baby number three is on the way.

One cut doesn’t a pattern make, so let’s take a stroll to yesteryear. Before baby announcement number two, Middleton was making the rounds at the Tour de France on July 5, 2014. Truly, it’s a good thing her every move is documented so we can track this—it was business as usual with her chestnut brown curls.

And then a month later, at the Tower of London on August 5, a hair change. This one is the most subtle, but as some publications pointed out, Middleton at the time was embracing her roots. Cue media fervor, because that’s a huge event (sigh). Then, just over another month later on September 8, the royal palace announced that Charlotte was coming to bless us all.

Intentional? That one’s your call, but here’s where the trend really comes together. The day was November 8, 2012; the place, a benefit dinner for her and Prince William’s alma mater, the University of St. Andrews. Eight months into her life as a duchess, Middleton by that point was well-known for her coiffed, shiny brown curls. The baby rumors had started up, but nothing was confirmed.

Flash forward to November 27, and the world received huge news: Middleton had gotten bangs, and they were fabulous. The world was so fully focused on her hair that when the royal family announced they were expecting, on December 3, it was straight out of the blue.

So we’re left to wonder: Is she doing this on purpose as a crazy-smart distraction tactic? Or (and I’m leaning toward this one), is it that Middleton knows she’ll be in the spotlight nonstop soon, so she merely preps for the frenzy? It could go either way. The royal family is notoriously tight-lipped, so it’s not likely the palace is going to cop to anything anytime soon. But forever and always, we’ll take any royals insight we can get.
