The secret to dressing for the holiday season isn’t layering or investing in a bunch of ugly Christmas sweaters. Nope. It’s velvet.

I’m not kidding. Velvet will turn any outfit—no matter how understated—into something festive. I don’t know what it is about velvet, but it just screams “HOLIDAYS.” Maybe it stems from Santa’s red velvet suit. Maybe it’s the cozy texture. Maybe it just reminds me of my mom’s annual holiday display. (LOTS of faux poinsettias. LOTS of velvet.) Regardless, wearing an outfit with even the slimmest strip of velvet is the easiest way to get into the holiday spirit.

I can show you this better than I can tell you. Just take a look at the recent celebrity ensembles below with varying amounts of velvet. They’ll instantly (and inexplicably) put you in the jolliest mood. Let your wardrobe follow suit.
