Feather Fashion Is the Trend That's Taking Over in 2019

Fashion trends right now are veering toward the big. Big shoulders. Big coats. Big hats. Big everything. A fully-sequined jumpsuit or a poufy tulle gown makes its way down the runway, and the world doesn’t even blink. The question becomes: What’s the new way to impress, and ensure all eyes are on you when you walk into a room? The 2019 solution has revealed itself—wear something feathered.

Feather fashion isn’t exactly a groundbreaking runway development. The trend dates back centuries—and the debate over its ethics has been ongoing. Still, in recent seasons, feathers—both real and faux—have reentered the zeitgeist, the marabou look coming back on the trim on a trouser here (Miu Miu), on the sleeve of a blazer there (Rachel Comey), or, in the most OTT of cases, all over.

If we were to pin-point the genesis of 2019’s Big Feather Energy, it would be Marc Jacobs’ spring runway. The collection, which featured technicolor plumage on gowns, blouses, and accessories has been in high demand, both for red carpet and fashion editorials. (Though the designer has used moved away from using fur in some collections, these pieces are made using “hand-placed ostrich feathers,” according to the brand’s website.)

The Marc Jacobs pieces have appeared in Teen Vogue, Allure, and, yes, Glamour. And they’re quite popular on the ‘gram: According to the influencer agency The Gramlist, an image posted of Kylie Jenner’s Architectural Digest cover story, in which she’s wearing one of these Spring 2019 dresses garnered 2.03 times the average “likes”.

Kylie. Kendall. Tracee. Lizzo. Kacey. Zendaya. Rita. Erika. Those are just a few of the celebrities that have embraced feathered fashion this year. And there have been countless influencers photographed in feather-trimmed Miu Miu during Fashion Week; models flouncing about in fully feathered mini dresses by up-and-coming labels like 16Arlington and Attico; and the friends-of-friends on Instagram posting about their feathered Staud bags, H&M slides, and other more mass-market takes on the trend. It’s inescapable.

So is it over-the-top? Yes. And is it accessible? Believe it or not, yes. Add a touch with bedroom-inspired slides for less than $30; you can get a feather-trimmed blazer for $70. And in terms of styling, one piece pretty much stands on its own: any piece is an eye-grabbing statement that doesn’t require anything else to constitute a look.

Considering, ahem, joining the flock? Behold, some of the best spring pieces that channel the Big Feather Energy everyone’s putting out in 2019.
