When it comes to footwear trends, you normally think about a specific category of shoes—cowboy boots, “ugly” sneakers, kitten heels—and not so much about a specific feature of its design. Squared-toe shoes are an exception, since they’ve defied categorization since their heyday in the ’90s. They’re not exactly universally beloved. (They’ve inspired headlines such as “The Square-Toe Shoe Must Die” and “Reasons Why Square Toed Shoes Are The Worst Shoes Ever.”) But they’ve stuck around, and have touched virtually every type of shoe type, from sandals to boots. And 2019 marks its big return to the fashion mainstream.
First popularized by Tom Ford at Gucci, square-toed shoes are seeing a resurgence thanks to big industry names, like Calvin Klein 205W39NYC and Helmut Lang, and indie favorites like Suzanne Rae and By Far, alike. At the most recent Fashion Week, they made appearances at Rosie Assoulin, Area, Proenza Schouler, and Eckhaus Latta.. You can buy everything from satin Mary Janes to velvet pumps, from retailers like Topshop and Urban Outfitters, with a square toe. So go ahead and get with the comeback—because this shoe is coming in hot for 2019.
