Everything We Know About 'GLOW' Season Two on Netflix

GLOW may be set in the world of ’80s female wrestlers, but the Netflix series certainly hits on today’s zeitgeist. From gender equality to reproductive rights, the series took on stereotypes and introduced us to a group of actresses who demand our attention. (The insanely good costumes and music are an added bonus, natch.)

Now with season two ahead, details are starting to emerge about how Ruth (Alison Brie) and everyone’s lives will change now that their show (the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) within a show has aired. The cast—as usual—remains tight-lipped, but they’ve also dropped hints about what to expect for their characters and how season two will evolve from season one. Here’s what we know so far.

The series will return for season two on June 29.

Netflix confirmed the date with a very hilarious, very fun video that you can see below:

Ruth and Debbie’s relationship is still damaged.

“I am so in love with Betty Gilpin (Debbie) as a person, so it’s comical and also sort of devastating that our characters are so at odds on the show,” Brie told us at the Golden Globes. “But how would you come back from something like that? Does Ruth deserve happiness? Can she have happiness while Debbie is still in her life? Can Debbie move on? I’m not sure what is fair or right. I know that the characters have a deep love for one another, so I’m hoping that they’ll get through it, but certainly it’s still a challenge that they’re facing in season two.”

But Betty Gilpin thinks there’s hope for them.

“I think that connection, that rope, is never going to be severed,” she told us. And why not? “I think there are certain relationships that come along with people that no matter how the circumstances of your life change, you have a sort of soul connection that’s unavoidable and hard to find. They have it in each other. Maybe wrestling is some strange, alternate reality where they can water their friendship in a secret, safe way while still not being able to make eye contact anywhere but the ring.”

But don’t forget that Debbie still doesn’t know Ruth had an abortion—and the father was Debbie’s estranged husband.

Gilpin plays coy on whether Debbie will find out, but says we’ll learn that maybe Debbie wasn’t the greatest friend to Ruth either before the affair happened. “Debbie is not a saint who neglected her friend a little bit,” Gilpin says. “Debbie is sort of the friend that does 70% of the talking at lunch and sort of forgets to ask you questions. We all have those friends. Ladies, if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you are that friend. I think that that can come back to bite you, for sure.” But enough to have an affair with your best friend’s husband? Um, no.

There will be even more intense wrestling in season two.

Kate Nash, who plays Rhonda, says the wrestling was harder and more intense than in season one. As for Rhonda’s personal life, Nash reveals that we’ll see her tested more next season. “You’ll see what actually having friends means to her, and maybe how it compromises when she’s not just listening to herself,” she explains. “We’ve made our pilot [episode], but we’re still a ramshackle group hanging on by a thread.” In other words, they need to make sure that G.L.O.W. finds an audience and stays on television.

Sam and Justine will get to know each other as father and daughter.

Toward the end of last season, Justine finally told Sam that he’s her dad. “Season two is about Sam and Justine figuring out how to make this father/daughter [dynamic] work,” Britt Baron (Justine) told us. You’ll also get to see Justine actually be a bit of a kid again, instead of the grown-up that she’s had be for so many years. “She had her guard up [before] because she’s carrying this secret the entire time, so now it’s exciting to see her soften up and be a kid. She’s only 16.”

Viewers might also meet Justine’s mother this season.

“She’s mentioned,” Baron teases. As for whether viewers will actually see Justine’s mom, Baron is a little less willing to offer up that information. “Maybe! We’ll see.”

Carmen will have more family turmoil.

Season one saw Carmen Wade struggle to live up to her father’s idea of who she should be, and the family dynamic doesn’t seem to be improving next season. Says Britney Young, “She has issues with other family members; I won’t say which ones, but [the good thing is that] we see her standing up for herself.”

A new female wrestler is joining the group.

As first reported by Deadline, Shakira Barrera (of the MTV series, Faking It), will play Yolando, aka Yo-Yo, a Mexican American dancer/stripper, and “out-and-proud lesbian who joins the team.”
