Selena Gomez Feels Like She Has No Friends
In August 2016, Selena Gomez announced she was taking time off to address lupus-triggered anxiety and depression. She emerged three months later at the 2016 American Music Awards and gave a very moving speech about self-love and self-care. “If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken,” she said.
In the months that followed, Gomez opened up more about the treatment she sought. “You have no idea how incredible it felt to just be with six girls, real people who couldn’t give two shits about who I was, who were fighting for their lives,” Gomez told Vogue. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve done, but it was the best thing I’ve done.”
And now Gomez is offering further insight into her mental health. In a new interview with Business of Fashion, she reveals a big part of taking care of herself was cutting ties with people who weren’t good for her.
“You are who you surround yourself with—100 percent,” she said. “If you’re around people who think that stuff is dumb, that think it’s ridiculous—’You’re crazy! You’re fine!’—but you don’t feel that way, then maybe it’s time to reevaluate that. It’s a lonely journey to really figure out where all this stuff is coming from…I had to lose a lot of people in my life to get there.”
When Gomez was asked what she meant by “losing people,” she replied, “You have to figure out the people that are in your circle. I feel like I know everybody but have no friends.”
She quickly clarified that she has “three good friends” who she can “tell everything to,” but her quote is certainly relatable and still rings true. Gomez is right: You are your environment. If you’re not surrounded by people—at work, at home, and in social settings—who aren’t helping you be the best, most authentic version of yourself, then you can run into trouble. At the end of the day, you have to put yourself first—and that means only letting good people into your inner circle.
“You have to have those few people that respect you, want the best for you and you want the best for them,” she said. “It sounds cheesy, but it’s hard.”
