Getting red carpet-ready is hard enough without there being a theme to contend with, which is what makes the Met Gala such a momentous style event[1]. The collective excitement (and anxiety) was palpable in the ELLE Canada[2] office prior to the big reveal, as we all wondered how celebrities[3] would dress for (or around) the theme. To curb our speculation, we asked Micaela Erlanger, stylist to the stars–we have her to thank for Lupita Nyong’o’s Met Gala coup last year, not to mention Jaime King’s fiery number this year–to find out what it takes to nail red carpet style[4]. Oh and we asked King to weigh in too!

What’s your best advice for putting an outfit together for a themed event like the Met Gala?
Erlanger: “You don’t have to wear the theme on your dress. Instead, you should find a way to interpret it.”
What was your approach to styling Jaime King?
Erlanger: “We really embraced colour and a minimalistic yet dramatic silhouette.”
Was there a particular trend that inspired your Met Gala look?
King: “I don’t follow or believe in trends. What’s always on trend is what makes you feel beautiful and confident – that’s what a trend is to me.”
What’s the key to accessorizing a look like King’s?
Erlanger: “We chose gorgeous and rare Forevermark Diamond pieces. They were beautiful and added just the right kind of bold elegance to her look.”
