Robert Durst, scion of one of New York’s largest real estate empires, has been arrested in New Orleans on a murder warrant issued by Los Angeles County, the Orleans Paris Sheriff’s Office said.
Durst is known for puzzling life twists that led him to be questioned but not charged in three mysterious deaths. There was no lawyer listed for Durst on the arrest report.
For years, questions have swirled around Durst about the unsolved killing of a close friend and confidante in Los Angeles 15 years ago, and about his first wife’s disappearance in 1982 and the shooting and dismemberment of a Texas neighbour in 2001.
HBO has been airing a documentary about Durst, called The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, and the final episode was slated to air Sunday night.
The 71-year-old was arrested by deputies from the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and booked just before 11 p.m. local time on Saturday, according to an online record of his arrest. He was being held without bond.
A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said F.B.I. agents participated in the arrest of Durst on a warrant issued in California.
