The former Alberta chief medical examiner Dr. Anny Sauvageau is engaged in a legal battle with the province, claiming wrongful termination in a $5.1 million lawsuit that was filed on her behalf. Recent developments show that Sauvageau is not backing down from a fight, and there are new allegations of political interference and mismanagement made against the province. In fact the lawyers for the former Alberta chief medical examiner are claiming that internal mismanagement issues are present in the administration that have an impact on the integrity of the death investigation process, with the possibility that autopsy reports could potentially be altered without the medical examiner being aware of it. The former ME also claims that any employee of the medical examiner office could access the case management system and change any system data without leaving any discernible trail that this was done.
Dr. Anny Sauvageau has claimed that she was wrongfully terminated from her position with the province, and that her dismissal as the Alberta chief medical examiner was at least partially motivated by politics and not by her performance in the position. Sauvageau also reports that she complained a number of times about the system vulnerabilities and was told to keep this information secret. Other allegations in the lawsuit include illegal report and death certificate distribution, illegal specimen and evidence releases, overtime fraud by a number of employees, and financial mismanagement associated with 3 bank accounts which were not disclosed by her predecessor. No claims or allegations have been proven in court yet and the battle continues to heat up.
