Federal health minister joins ALS Canada to share how much viral videos raised, and how funds will be used

Health Minister Rona Ambrose and ALS Canada CEO Tammy Moore are holding a news conference today in Ottawa to reveal how much money was raised in Canada through last summer’s Ice Bucket Challenge.
The news conference starts at 10:30 a.m. ET Wednesday.
Ambrose and Moore are also expected to outline how the funds raised from the viral videos will be spent, and a new funding and research agreement with Brain Canada.
Ambrose was one of the many politicians across Canada who endured a bucket of icy cold water over their heads as part of an online campaign to raise awareness and research funds.
Other politicians — including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who was nominated by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, among others — declined the cold shower but cut a cheque to the charity instead.
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, named after the late New York Yankees ballplayer. It’s a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that affects the brain’s nerve cells and the spinal cord.
