Wood Buffalo RCMP Patrols Fort McMurray

The Wood Buffalo RCMP has been patrolling Fort McMurray on a regular basis since the city was placed under a forced evacuation due to one of the largest wildfires in history, and while much of their duties have been to rescue people who have not evacuated yet they have also had at least one report of theft or looting so far. Last Friday the police responded to a call about someone who was breaking into one of the residences in the city, and after using a canine unit to track the reported criminal the police arrested a local man at his home. The Wood Buffalo RCMP has stated that they will respond to any reports of theft or looting, and so far the only report of theft or looting was the incident that occurred Friday.

Fort McMurray is a close community in spite of the fact that many oil companies fly in/fly out much of the labor force. The fact that the entire city is full of empty homes as well as properties that have been destroyed and that there has only been a single report of looting or theft so far just shows the sense of community that most residents feel. The main purpose of the Wood Buffalo RCMP is to look for stragglers and people who did not heed the evacuation order and are still in the city in spite of the ongoing threat from the wildfire. A statement by RCMP Inspector Gibson Glavin explained “People need to understand that evacuation orders are issued for a reason, and that not leaving puts them and emergency responders at unnecessary risk.”

Downtown Police Raid by Wood Buffalo RCMP Leads to Drug Charges Against Two Men

The Wood Buffalo RCMP performed a downtown police raid and found more than they expected when their single target ended up catching two men. On April 1, 2016 the police went to an apartment on Manning Street to serve an arrest warrant for Yimag Abdi Ahmed and take him into custody. According to Cpl. George Cameron, the spokesperson for the Wood Buffalo RCMP, Ahmed had not shown up for a court date and that led to the arrest warrant being issued. When police went to place the 24 year old Ahmed under arrest the suspect resisted the officers and fought being placed under arrest. No one was hurt in the fight that followed but now Yimag is facing an additional charge of obstructing a peace officer as well as marijuana possession and multiple counts of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking charges.

During the Wood Buffalo RCMP downtown police raid 24 year old Maya Ahmed was also arrested and is facing charges of obstructing a peace officer and possession of and trafficking cocaine. Police discovered almost 3 grams of marijuana, around 107 grams of cocaine, and more than $5,500 in cash when they arrested Maya. Cameron said “Obviously they didn’t want to cooperate and didn’t want to come with our members. One of his conditions was to keep the peace, which obviously some people didn’t want to be doing that day.” Approximately 7 other individuals were arrested at the apartment but these individuals were not charged. Cpl. Cameron explained that “Everyone scattered as soon as police arrived, which raised suspicion. We had to detain everyone to find out who they were and what was happening. They were arrested until we could find out why they were running. It’s not uncommon for someone to be arrested in a situation like this but then released without charge.”

Wood Buffalo RCMP Warns Stealing Gas Can Cause Explosions After Anzac Gas Thefts

On March 19, 2016, the Wood Buffalo RCMP received reports of one or more persons stealing gas from vehicles, and the police are cautioning that this activity can cause explosions. The thefts occurred near Anzac, and several vehicles that were parked in the Stony Mountain Road area in a residential parking lot had their fuel tanks punctured and gas drained from the tank. A total of 5 pick up trucks were found with punctured fuel tanks, and one of the vehicles also had the tonneau cover on the truck slashed as well. According to Wood Buffalo RCMP Cpl. George Cameron says that the evidence which was found at the scene makes theft rather than a prank the most likely. Cameron also issued a warning, saying “This really was not the brightest thing to do. They’re lucky a spark didn’t flare up when they were puncturing the tanks. It’s pretty dangerous. They’re lucky they didn’t explode.”

The Wood Buffalo RCMP investigation into the individual or individuals stealing gas in the Anzac area started when several vehicle owners came out in the morning and noticed pools of gasoline underneath their vehicles. A majority of the vehicles that were damaged still had some gas in them, but the size of the pools and the amount of gas that each owner reported having in their tank did not match up. This caused officers to suspect that someone stole gas using a container, and then tried to reseal the punctures created in the tanks. Police also discovered a broken jerry can close to the scene. Anyone who knows anything about the person or persons stealing gas in the Anzac area can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or the Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4040.

Witnesses who were in the area reported seeing a suspect fleeing the area headed down Hardin Street in the direction of Franklin Avenue.

The Boomtown Casino shooting is being investigated by the Wood Buffalo RCMP General Investigation Section and Serious Crime Unit. A description of the suspect has not been released by police, and officers were not able to immediately confirm whether the victim or the suspect involved in the case ever entered the casino. The RCMP has stated that the investigators do not suspect that this incident was random, and they do not believe that the suspect poses a threat to the general public. Anyone who has any information about this crime or the suspect involved should contact the RCMP and provide this information to investigators. There has been an increase in the shootings and other violent crimes in Wood Buffalo in recent years and the community needs to come together and let the criminals know that these acts will not be tolerated or overlooked.

Missing Woman from Fort McMurray Located After Wood Buffalo RCMP Investigation

missing woman, Wood Buffalo RCMP

A missing woman from Fort McMurray has been located after a Wood Buffalo RCMP investigation. 52 year old Joanne Morin was reported missing by family members after she was last seen on November 25 when she left Fort McMurray to go to Calgary. Morin’s family expected her to be back the same day, and by December 2 they contacted the police to report her missing when no one heard from her. The disappearance of Morin was widely reported by the media, and Morin eventually contacted her family to let them know she was safe and that she was currently in the Edmonton area. In addition to the phone call from Morin her safety was confirmed by the Morinville RCMP detachment.

The Wood Buffalo RCMP investigation into the missing woman has been closed, and Morin has not committed any crime so no charges will be filed. According to Cst. Ashley Quallie, the spokesperson fr the Wood Buffalo RCMP, “All we are able to confirm is that she is safe and her family knows she is safe.” Quallie would not elaborate on why Morin was in Edmonton instead of Calgary, or why the woman had not had any contact with her family since sh left Fort McMurray in late November. Concern started when Morin’s family learned that she did not arrive in Calgary as planned, and the concern grew as days went by and Morin did not call her family. At least Morin was found safe and unharmed, and she has contacted her family so they know she is okay.
