Rent Relief Offered by Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation

An announcement by the Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation may give some Fort McMurray resident much needed rent relief. According to the organization tenants will receive rent relief for May and June, with relief starting May 3 which was the first say that the mandatory evacuation for the area was put into place because of the wildfire emergency. The press release also reported that at minimum the rent relief would cover May and June but there is a possibility that this could be extended at some point. During the vote the board members of the WBHDC voted unanimously to provide the relief. It is nice to see the board members do the right thing for tenants and the community because many people are already struggling with the loss of property and the expense of relocating during the mandatory evacuation.

In addition to rent relief for at least two months the Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation has announced that all of their tenants will have a home which they can come back to. For tenants who resided in property which was damaged or destroyed during the wildfire they will be relocated into suitable housing in other properties controlled by the organization. Maggie Farrington, the board chair of the organization, explained “Though the law states we are legally entitled to collect rents, even during such a terrible disaster, the Board felt strongly we had a moral obligation not to impose additional hardship upon our tenants who have already suffered so much.” Acting CEO of WBHDC Greg Elsasser stated “Though our losses to the wildfire were restricted to townhomes in Beacon Hill and our recently completed Siltstone project in Timberlea. People who have lost their homes will be relocated immediately into appropriate accommodations in one of our other properties. Looking after existing tenants is our first priority.”

Timberlea Housing Project Finally Opened by Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation

Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation, Timberlea housing project

The Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation Timberlea housing project is finally open after a fire in 2014 put the project behind schedule and created a number of delays. The Siltstone Ride apartment complex has started seeing new residents move in. In June of 2014 a large fire burned one of the biggest buildings at the housing project to the ground, and the complex could not open as first scheduled because of the fire damage and losses. WBHCD president Bryan Lutes explained “(It’s) very proud day for us. Because of the obstacles that we ran up against in getting this development finished.” The project involved two main buildings where residences are located, an the building that burned down last year was one of the two residence structures. The fire was caused when a soil stabilization mixer ruptured a gas line at the site, and the natural gas that leaked started a fire when it was ignited from sparks caused by utility and power lines.

The Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation Timberlea housing project was around 80% complete but the buildings were empty when the fire started in 2014. One fo the firefighters who battled the blaze was injured, and the building was almost a complete loss because of the damage sustained. Lutes told journalists “In 14 months, it’s been completely rebuilt. It’s ready to occupy, the turnover date is today, in fact. Siltstone Ridge means more opportunities as we go forward to help people that need assistance with our extremely expensive housing cost. At entry levels, we have teachers and nurses and municipal employees that need some assistance.” The other residential building on site was not damaged when the fire broke out, and residents started to move into apartments in that building in January of this year.

Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation Holds Willow Square Engagement Session

The Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation recently held a Willow Square engagement session in order to allow the public to get information and ask questions, and the crowd was emotional during the meeting held at the Sawridge Inn on Monday. The former Willow Square lands are still vacant, and the municipally owned developer who is in charge of the project shared the plan’s early concepts at the event. The proposal that was unveiled will include a senior facility, residential space, and retail space so that social housing, affordable housing, opportunities for seniors, and marketing can all occur in the same space.

Mike Evans, the presenter at the Willow Square engagement session scheduled by the Wood Buffalo Housing and Development Corporation , said “Wood Buffalo (Housing) accepted the stewardship of this parcel of land to facilitate the construction in this community of an Aging in Place facility for seniors. It’s not financially viable as a project that’s exclusive for seniors on this site. There’s an opportunity to meet the needs of seniors as they’ve been expressed in this community for a number of years, but also to provide some complementary development that would provide benefits to seniors, but also the community at large.” According to Bryan Lutes, the president of WBHDC, “At this point we’re still looking at what the whole site will look at. The purpose of the needs assessment are to say, what the gaps are in the community and what of those gaps we can accommodate on the site. Once we have that we’ll be able to determine what the site’s going to look like.”
