The United States is asking Poland for the extradition of Roman Polanski for rape charges that date back to 1977, and this is not the first time that the US has tried to get their hands on the movie director but so far they have not been successful. Months ago the United States tried to have the director arrested in Warsaw but Polanski was allowed to leave after being questioned by prosecutors. In 1977 Roman Polanski plead guilty to unlawful sex with a minor after he was accused of raping 13 year old Samantha Geimer after a photo shoot had ended, and this took place at the home of actor Jack Nicholson. Once Polanski plead guilty he fled the United States because he was worried about a severe sentence from the court.

The extradition of Roman Polanski on the old rape charges has been an ongoing effort by US authorities. In 2009 the director was arrested in Switzerland at the request of the USA, and he spent months before he was allowed to leave. Polanski is also well known for being the husband of Sharon Tate, the actress who was murdered by the Manson cult. At the time of the murders Roman Polanski, the father of the baby that 8 month pregnant Sharon Tate was carrying, was away from home working. Today the famous director is 81 years old, and it is doubtful whether prosecutors in Poland will be willing to allow him to be extradited back to the USA. Last year Polanski’s lawyers tried to get a new hearing but a judge refused.
